Comparative StudyOptical coherence tomography: a new method to assess aneurysm healing.
Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage affects approximately 10/100,000 people per year. Endovascular coil embolization is used increasingly to treat cerebral aneurysms and its safety and durability is rapidly developing. The long-term durability of coil embolization of cerebral aneurysms remains in question; patients treated using this modality require multiple follow-up angiography studies and occasional repeated treatments. ⋯ Optical coherence tomography may obviate the need for subsequent follow-up angiography studies as well as aid in the understanding of endovascular tissue healing. Data in this study demonstrate that further investigation of in vivo imaging with such probes is warranted.

The effect of gamma knife irradiation on functions of striatum in rats.
An animal model has been developed to study the effect of gamma knife surgery(GKS) on cerebral function. ⋯ Targeting by using the Régis-Valliccioni frame was very accurate compared with targeting with coordinates based on brain maps used hitherto. Although targeting improved the accuracy, further effort will still be necessary to reduce errors along dorsoventral axis. The apomorphine test indicated a reduced dopaminergic function of the irradiated area including striatum, which accompanied histological changes after a high dose of irradiation (150 Gy).

Postoperative cerebral hyperperfusion associated with impaired cognitive function in patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy.
Cognitive impairment occurs in 20 to 30% of patients following carotid endarterectomy (CEA). The purpose of the present study was to determine whether postoperative cerebral hyperperfusion is associated with impairment of cognitive function in patients undergoing that procedure. ⋯ Postoperative cerebral hyperperfusion is associated with impairment of cognitive function in patients undergoing CEA. Furthermore, the development of hyperperfusion syndrome is associated with the persistence of postoperative cognitive impairment.

Evaluation of a new concept for the management of skull base chordomas and chondrosarcomas.
Chordomas and chondrosarcomas of the skull base are rare locally invasive tumors associated with high recurrence rates. The aim of this study was to evaluate the concept of microsurgical tumor volume reduction followed by early gamma knife surgery (GKS). ⋯ Results of this treatment strategy are encouraging but the efficacy of this multimodal treatment combining surgery and early GKS requires a longer follow up.
