Comparative Study
The success of thoracoscopic anterior fusion in a consecutive series of 112 pediatric spinal deformity cases.
A retrospective review of a single surgeon consecutive series of video-assisted thoracoscopic anterior release and fusion. ⋯ Thoracoscopic anterior release and fusion of the thoracic spine is a safe and effective procedure when combined with posterior instrumentation and fusion. The primary goal of increasing the flexibility of a rigid spine and achieving a solid arthrodesis occurred in the vast majority of cases.

Case report. ⋯ To avoid life-altering complications, it is important to evaluate the cervical spine (especially in the elderly), avoid neck extension during intubation, and use careful airway management in patients with suspected stenosis/spondylosis.

A retrospective study of a cohort of 132 girls with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). ⋯ A mathematical model was used to demonstrate when height and angle growths tend to stabilize (1 year after menarche for height values and at the time of menarche for angle values) in AIS. In the absence of a brace effect, a significant correlation between both growth rates was noted up until 2.5 years after menarche.

Retrospective study with clinical and radiologic evaluation of hemivertebra resection in children with congenital cervical scoliosis. ⋯ Resection of a cervical hemivertebra may be an option in the treatment of congenital cervical scoliosis. A good correction of the local deformity and a complete correction of head tilt are achieved. By early operation in young children, the development of severe secondary deformities in the upper thoracic spine can be avoided.

A prospective radiographic study of 160 volunteers without symptoms of spinal disease was conducted. ⋯ Understanding the patterns of variation in sagittal alignment may help to discover the association between spinal balance and the development of degenerative changes in the spine.
