Case report. ⋯ Diabetes is an important condition that can predispose an individual to the development of localized or extensive spinal epidural abscess.

Randomized, double-blinded, placebo controlled animal study. ⋯ Our results suggest that teriparatide enhances spinal fusion while calcitonin has a neutral effect. The teriparatide group had the best histologic fusion rate and Emery scores, while the calcitonin group was similar to the saline controls. Although not significant, the teriparatide group had a strong trend towards superior radiographic fusion over the calcitonin group.

A retrospective review of the long-term clinical and radiographic outcomes of anterior spinal fusion with instrumentation for thoracolumbar and lumbar curves in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). ⋯ The anterior approach in the treatment of thoracolumbar and lumbar curves in AIS offers good long-term functional outcomes for patients. Despite expected degenerative changes, patients scored well on the SRS and Oswestry tests, and were able to pursue careers and family activities.

A retrospective comparative study. ⋯ Old age, osteopenia, preoperative comorbidities, and severe global sagittal imbalance were found to be frequent in patients with proximal junctional fracture. In addition, marked correction of sagittal malalignment might be considered as a risk factor of upper instrumented vertebra collapse followed by adjacent vertebral subluxation, which occurred in the first 6 months after corrective surgery with the potential for causing severe neurologic deficit because of the severe local kyphotic deformity.

Retrospective review. ⋯ Primary NM scoliosis and revision sagittal plane deformities appear to carry greatest incidence of NMCs during surgical intervention. Most observed NMCs did not result in a permanent neurologic deficit. Neuromonitoring should be assessed throughout the entire surgical procedure. This study may aid surgeons and patients to better assess neurologic risks related to spinal deformity surgery.
