A structured literature review. ⋯ Wide variation in the number and type of eligibility criteria from randomized clinical trials of well defined back pain syndromes was identified. These results support the need for developing and disseminating international classification criteria for these clinical conditions.
-
A cross-sectional population-based study. ⋯ This large population-based study indicates that obesity is associated with a high prevalence of low back pain. Further studies are needed to determine if the association is causal.

After anterior cervical discectomy, fusion was radiologically, biomechanically, and histologically assessed in a sheep spine fusion model. ⋯ The MCM alone is not able to replace autologous bone grafts. Early activation of the platelets by calcium, which is released from mineralized collagen, could be the reason for the insufficient osteoinductive effect of PRP. In consequence, the combined application of mineralized collagen and PRP had no significant osteoinductive effect in this model.

Consecutive case series. ⋯ In a large series of rhBMP-2 augmented multilevel fusions, the pseudarthrosis rate was 10.2% at 6 months following surgery. Since the risk of pseudarthrosis increases with the number of fusion levels, a long fusion lever arm may biomechanically overwhelm the biologic advantage of rhBMP-2. While rhBMP-2 is known to enhance fusion rates, it does not guarantee fusion in all situations.

Acute cervical fractures in ankylosing spondylitis: an opportunity to correct preexisting deformity.
A new technique for the management of traumatic cervical fracture in patients with chin-on-chest deformity in ankylosing spondylitis is presented. OBJECTIVE.: To present a new surgical technique for acute deformity correction through cervical fractures in the setting of kyphotic deformities. ⋯ Surgical extension osteotomy in the lower cervical spine through the fracture site using the anterior lengthening bar-halo extension brace seems to be a safe method for correcting spine flexion deformity in ankylosing spondylitis after traumatic fracture.
