This study measured the frequency of lumbar intervertebral disc nucleus pulposus microscopic calcification and angiogenesis in adult patients undergoing discectomy compared to normal cadavers. ⋯ Disc nucleus pulposus microscopic calcification is a common event occurring in adult patients suffering from lumbar disc herniation. Mechanisms that link disc degeneration, angiogenesis, and calcification remain a focus for further researches that may be useful in future medical treatments before surgical treatment of lumbar disc herniation.

New neurologic deficit after spinal surgery is a rare complication that must be promptly diagnosed and treated to reduce the risk of permanent neurologic disability. ⋯ Normal somatosensory-evoked potentials or motor-evoked potentials in a patient denying sensation of stimuli offer objective evidence of the psychogenic nature of the para/tetraplegia. This report describes a case in which psychopathology interfered with the outcome of a frequently used procedure for a well-defined, chronic, painful condition.

Case report. ⋯ Unlike most cases of primary intradural melanoma, this patient presented with unusual radiologic findings in the cervical spinal cord. The case described in the present study illustrates that primary spinal cord melanoma is rare and must be diagnosed with caution due to its variable clinical and radiologic presentation.

Prospective study of community-based female volunteers. ⋯ This was the first study to confirm the relationship of PI and the development of DS in a long-term prospective observation. Proposed pathogenetic differences might explain the fact that L4-DS is far more prevalent than L3-DS. The development of DS could be predicted by baseline lumbopelvic morphology among the highly susceptible perimenopause women.
