Details of presentation and approach to the treatment of scoliosis in a case of a Rigid Spine Syndrome (RSS). ⋯ The chromosomal bases of CMD and characteristic features of RSS, including diagnostic tests, have been reviewed. Surgical intervention with spinal deformity fusion, correction, and instrumentation is indicated in RSS with progressive spinal imbalance not responding to conservative therapy is safe and can give promising results.

A report of 3 cases of upper sacral tumors excised by occluding the abdominal aorta with a balloon dilation catheter (BDC). ⋯ To occlude the abdominal aorta with a BDC may effectively reduce intraoperative hemorrhage, thus assisting the surgeon in the complete and safe resection of upper sacral tumors.

Giovanni Alfonso Borelli is often described as the father of biomechanics. He was born in Naples in 1608. ⋯ Borelli died in Rome on December 31, 1679, but his impressive body of original work helped inspire a great number of future scientists, microscopists, and inventors. The highest honor bestowed by the American Society of Biomechanics is the Giovanni Borelli Award.

Pinealectomy was used to induce scoliosis in Broiler chickens, and a histologic investigation of the pinealectomized chickens was performed. ⋯ The results show that the incidence of scoliosis using pinealectomized Broiler chickens is sufficient to study histologic changes of the vertebral body before onset of scoliosis. We found that the osteoclast number and trabecular thickness increased in pinealectomized chickens after 3 days after surgery, just before scoliosis began to develop, and that no change in the growth plate occurred. This suggests that there is no association between changes in the growth plate and the development of scoliosis. However, the change in osteoclast number may have an association with the development of scoliosis, through changes in bone modeling.
