A randomized controlled trial on the efficacy of exercise for patients with chronic neck pain.
A randomized controlled trial with single-blind outcome assessments. ⋯ At week 6, patients with chronic neck pain can benefit from the neck exercise program with significant improvement in disability, pain, and isometric neck muscle strength in different directions. However, the effect of exercise was less favorable at 6 months.

Comparative Study
Comparison of multifidus muscle atrophy and trunk extension muscle strength: percutaneous versus open pedicle screw fixation.
This study was conducted by retrospective case selection and prospective observation of longitudinal changes of the multifidus muscle cross-sectional area and of trunk extension muscle strength in percutaneous and open pedicle screw fixations. ⋯ Percutaneous pedicle screw fixation caused less paraspinal muscle damage than open pediclescrew fixation and had positive effects on postoperative trunk muscle performance.

A case of an odontoid nonunion in a child treated with anterior screw fixation. ⋯ Very few cases have been reported of pediatric odontoid nonunions. If the fracture pattern allows, then direct anterior screw fixation should be considered in order to maintain range of motion at the atlantoaxial articulation.

A prospective trial of preoperative MRI study in patients with "idiopathic" scoliosis. ⋯ Foramen magnum decompression for neural axis malformations could prevent permanent neurologic complications during scoliosis surgery. There is little risk of neurologic complications in patients with "idiopathic" scoliosis whose neurologic status is normal, even if these patients have a neural axis malformation on MRI.

Retrospective review of all percutaneous vertebroplasties performed in the authors' institution from November 1994 to June 2002. OBJECTIVE.: To determine the factors affecting the outcome of percutaneous vertebroplasty for the treatment of persistent painful osteoporotic fractures. ⋯ Appropriate patient selection is essential for achieving clinical success. Better results can be expected in patients with an American Society of Anesthesiologists score of I and when the level managed is confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging and the vertebral body height loss is less than 70%.
