Multicenter Study Observational StudyClinical spectrum and short-term outcome of adult patients with purpura fulminans: a French multicenter retrospective cohort study.
Data on purpura fulminans (PF) in adult patients are scarce and mainly limited to meningococcal infections. Our aim has been to report the clinical features and outcomes of adult patients admitted in the intensive care unit (ICU) for an infectious PF, as well as the predictive factors for limb amputation and mortality. ⋯ Purpura fulminans carries a high mortality and morbidity. Pneumococcal PF leads to a higher risk of amputation.

Multicenter StudyPain distress: the negative emotion associated with procedures in ICU patients.
The intensity of procedural pain in intensive care unit (ICU) patients is well documented. However, little is known about procedural pain distress, the psychological response to pain. ⋯ Procedural pain has both sensory and emotional dimensions. We found that, although procedural pain intensity (the sensory dimension) and distress (the emotional dimension) may closely covary, there are certain factors than can preferentially influence each of the dimensions. Clinicians are encouraged to appreciate the multidimensionality of pain when they perform procedures and use this knowledge to minimize the patient's pain experience.

Multicenter Study Comparative Study Observational StudyCorticosteroid treatment in critically ill patients with severe influenza pneumonia: a propensity score matching study.
To determine clinical predictors associated with corticosteroid administration and its association with ICU mortality in critically ill patients with severe influenza pneumonia. ⋯ Administration of corticosteroids in patients with severe influenza pneumonia is associated with increased ICU mortality, and these agents should not be used as co-adjuvant therapy.

Multicenter Study Observational StudyIntensive care utilization following major noncardiac surgical procedures in Ontario, Canada: a population-based study.
Patients are sometimes admitted to intensive care units (ICU) after elective noncardiac surgery for advanced monitoring and treatments not available on a general postsurgical ward. However, patterns of ICU utilization are poorly understood. Our aims were to assess the incidence and determinants of ICU utilization after elective noncardiac surgical procedures. ⋯ There is a wide variation in early ICU admission across and within surgical procedures. The individual hospital accounts for a large proportion of this variation. Further research is required to identify the basis for this variation and to develop better methods for allocating ICU resources for postoperative management of surgical patients.

Multicenter Study Observational StudyFactors associated with health-related quality of life 6 years after ICU discharge in a Finnish paediatric population: a cohort study.
Long-term data are urgently needed in children after intensive care. The aim of this study was to measure health-related quality of life 6 years after intensive care in a paediatric intensive care population. ⋯ The long-term quality of life after paediatric intensive care is good for the majority of children and young people, and it is dependent on the number of chronic diagnoses and the burden of the chronic disease, especially neurological diseases.
