Review Meta Analysis
Closed suction surgical wound drainage after hip fracture surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.
There is still debate over the use of drains following hip fracture surgery. We have performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature for randomised trials that related to the use of closed suction drains following hip fracture surgery. ⋯ All other outcomes reported failed to show any benefit from the use of drains. Further randomised trials are required and until they have been undertaken the efficacy of closed surgical drainage systems in hip fracture surgery is unknown.

Osteosarcoma, the most common type of primary malignant tumour that develops in bone, can be classified into several different sub-types. While the majority of osteosarcomas are highly malignant, there are some low-grade variants. Since the introduction of chemotherapy into the multi-modal treatment regimen of high-grade osteosarcoma, its prognosis has impressively improved, with long-term survival being achieved in two-thirds of all patients. ⋯ O. S. S are currently active in many European countries.

Hip fractures are a common and increasing problem. Outcome varies considerably between hospitals. The reasons for this variability are complex. ⋯ In the space of 5 years, only modest improvements have been made in the care of patients with hip fracture. Audit tools should look at pre-existing comorbidity and functional outcome as well as the process of care, mortality and length of hospital stay. Future guidelines should be evidence-based, concentrate on outcome measures, and account for variations in demography.
