To investigate the effects of oral carbohydrate solution consumed until 2 h before the surgery in the patients that would undergo open radical retropubic prostatectomy on postoperative metabolic stress, patient anxiety, and comfort. ⋯ Preoperative consumption of high carbohydrate drink (Pre-op) decreases insulin resistance and enhances patient comfort leading to lesser sense of hunger and thirst in the preoperative period in open radical retropubic prostatectomies.

We aimed to examine the influence of donor age on living-donor kidney transplantation (KTx), particularly with regard to long-term graft survival in young recipients with aged kidney grafts. ⋯ Kidney grafts from older living donors affected long-term graft survival in young recipients. In addition to the damage from rejection, aged kidney grafts, which have less nephron mass, may have a limited capacity to appropriately respond to increases in physiological or metabolic demands of young recipients, leading to a greater reduction in renal function.

Caecum perforation after renal transplantation: a case report and review of literature.
Gastrointestinal (GI) complication used to be the second most common complication in renal transplant patients after infection (Bardaxoglou et al. in Transpl Int 6(3):148-152, 1993). Review of transplant registry reveals that GI complication is no longer the second most common type of complication after renal transplant, but that it is still a common cause of significant amount of deaths in renal transplant recipients (De Bartolomeis et al. in Transpl Proc 37(6):2504-2506, 2005). In a study of 1,515 adults with severe GI complication after renal transplant, Sarkio et al. (Transpl Int 17(9):505-510, 2004) reported that gastroduodenal ulcers followed by colon perforation were the two biggest groups of GI complications during the first year after renal transplantation. ⋯ This is particularly so because these patients were previously exposed to uremia before transplantation which alters their protein metabolism hence interfering with tissue healing there after (Carson et al. in Ann Surg 188(1):109-113, 1978). GI complications including colon perforation after renal transplantation have effect on a patient's long-term survival (Gil-Vernet et al. in Transpl Proc 39(7):2190-2193, 2007). Despite this, the role of renal transplantation medication compared to anatomic anomaly in GI complication has been equivocal.

Incisional hernias are among the most frequent complications following abdominal surgery with impact on morbidity and mortality rates. Elevated uremia toxins may inhibit granulation tissue formation and impair wound healing, thereby promoting incisional hernia development. Here, we quantified the hazard ratio for incisional hernia prevalence in patients at risk undergoing abdominal reoperations with interrelationship to kidney function. In the same cohort, incidence rates for de novo wound healing disturbances within a4-month follow-up period were determined. ⋯ Chronic kidney disease is associated with impaired wound healing and constitutes an independent risk factor for incisional hernia development.

In view of the limited information on neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) after spinal cord injury (SCI) in the literature, this study aimed to investigate the complication rate of NLUTD after SCI and to describe the clinical management of NLUTD in Taiwan. ⋯ This is the first study using nationwide datasets to evaluate the overall complication rate of NLUTD associated with SCI, which is shown to be lower than previously reported. While various treatment options are available, urinary catheterization is the most common treatment for NLUTD.
