Effects of additional iron doses on hepcidin-25 level in hemodialysis patients without evident iron deficiency.
Serum hepcidin-25 is not only a marker of iron stores, but also an acute phase reactant, and it could fluctuate in response to erythropoietic activity. ⋯ Activation of erythropoiesis by additional IV iron administration overcomes moderate inflammation in suppressing hepcidin-25. Thus, hepcidin-25 could be clinically useful to evaluate iron status in patients with renal anemia.

Many complications of percutaneous nephrolithotomy(PNL) were reported. In this report, we present a rare complication, which has never been reported. ⋯ It was suspected intraoperative and confirmed radiologically postoperative. In this case, pulmonary emboli have had no clinical consequences and were managed conservatively.

To determine whether vigorous and moderate physical activity volumes are associated with skeletal muscle loss and chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD) in hemodialysis (HD) patients. ⋯ Vigorous and moderate physical activity volumes were positively associated with skeletal muscle mass but not skeletal muscle strength or surrogate markers for CKD-MBD.

To evaluate our experience on diagnosis and management of penile fractures. ⋯ Penile fracture can be diagnosed easily with history and physical examination, and favorable functional results can be achieved with early surgical repair.

To assess the risk factors for septic shock in patients with acute obstructive pyelonephritis requiring emergency drainage of the upper urinary tract. ⋯ Thrombocytopenia and positive blood culture were independent risk factors for septic shock in acute obstructive pyelonephritis requiring emergency drainage. Thrombocytopenia would be practically useful as a predictor of septic shock.
