Functions of aquaporin 1 and α-epithelial Na+ channel in rat acute lung injury induced by acute ischemic kidney injury.
To establish a rat model of acute ischemic kidney injury by continually occluding the bilateral renal artery and renal veins, the functions of α-epithelial Na(+) channel (α-ENaC) and aquaporin (AQP1) in lung injury induced by acute kidney injury (AKI) were examined and compared with lung injury induced by endotoxin. ⋯ The TNF-α and IL-6 levels increased significantly and the pulmonary expression of AQP1 and α-ENaC declined at the early stage of AKI.

A randomized clinical trial of high volume peritoneal dialysis versus extended daily hemodialysis for acute kidney injury patients.
Acute kidney injury (AKI) requiring dialysis in critically ill patients is associated with an in-hospital mortality rate of 50-80 %. Extended daily hemodialysis (EHD) and high volume peritoneal dialysis (HVPD) have emerged as alternative modalities. ⋯ Despite faster metabolic control and higher dialysis dose and ultrafiltration with EHD, this study provides no evidence of a survival benefit of EHD compared with HVPD. The limitations of this study were that the results were not presented according to the intention to treat and it did not control other supportive management strategies as nutrition support and timing of dialysis initiation that might influence outcomes in AKI.

Clinical factors associated with shock in bacteremic UTI.
Urinary tract infection (UTI) often causes bacteremia, resulting in shock. The purpose of this study is to investigate urological bacteremia and bacteremia shock cases and seek for the clinical factors associated with urological bacteremic shock. ⋯ Indwelling urinary catheters before UTI and high CRP were clinical factors associated with urological bacteremic shock. This result should be considered during decision-making for UTI treatments in high risk cases or urological bacteremia cases.

Gabapentin versus pregabalin in improving sleep quality and depression in hemodialysis patients with peripheral neuropathy: a randomized prospective crossover trial.
In dialysis patients, painful peripheral neuropathy (PPN) is associated with sleep disturbance and mood disorders. Our goal was to compare the effects of gabapentin and pregabalin on improving sleep quality and depression among hemodialysis patients with PPN. ⋯ Our results showed for the first time a good and similar efficacy of both drugs on pain intensity, quality of sleep and depression in hemodialysis patients with PPN.

Effect of hemodialysis session on the dynamics of carnitine ester profile changes in L-carnitine pretreated end-stage renal disease patients.
Carnitine deficiency is common in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients receiving hemodialysis (HD) treatment. We investigated the effects of L-carnitine supplementation on acyl carnitine (AC) profile and the changes of distinct ACs during a single HD session in long-term L-carnitine pretreated ESRD patients. ⋯ The washout induced by HD session results in variable depletion of short-, medium-, and long-chain carnitine esters in carnitine-pretreated patients; the recovery of the circulating carnitine esters from the body stores occurs within 30 min after the cessation of the HD procedure.
