The association between IL-1 family gene polymorphisms and colorectal cancer: A meta-analysis.
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a major public health problem given its high incidence and mortality. This study focuses on examining the associations between IL-1α, IL-1β, and IL-1RN polymorphisms and colorectal cancer susceptibility. ⋯ The current meta-analysis demonstrated that IL-1α rs3783553, IL-1β + 31C/T, IL-1β + 511C/T, and IL-1RN VNTR are critical genes for CRC susceptibility.

The Lithuanian population has outstanding rates of alcohol consumption and alcohol related mortality. Alteration of brain dopaminergic system play a role in the risk for addiction disorders. We evaluated the association of one single nucleotide polymorphism rs1800497 in the Ankyrin Repeat and Kinase Domain Containing 1 - Dopamine Receptor D2 complex (ANKK1-DRD2) and a catechol-o-methyltransferase (COMT) rs4680 single nucleotide polymorphism with the risk for alcohol use disorder and impulsiveness in Lithuanian population. Both genetic polymorphisms are known to alter brain dopaminergic activity, thus we also investigated the possible interaction effect of these polymorphisms. ⋯ Our study demonstrated that the interaction of COMT rs4680 and ANKK1-DRD2 rs1800497 genetic polymorphisms is associated with a hazardous use of alcohol.

The Angiotensin system is implicated in the pathogenesis of COVID-19. First, ACE2 is the cellular receptor for SARS-CoV-2, and expression of the ACE2 gene could regulate the individuaĺs susceptibility to infection. In addition, the balance between ACE1 and ACE2 activity has been implicated in the pathogenesis of respiratory diseases and could play a role in the severity of COVID-19. ⋯ In conclusion, an adverse outcome of COVID-19 was associated with male gender, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia and the ACE1 genotype. Our work suggested that the ACE1-I/D might influence COVID-19 severity, but the effect was dependent on the hypertensive status. This result requires further validation in other large cohorts.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a serious microvascular complication of diabetes across the world. Recently, many circular RNAs (circRNAs) can exert a crucial role in DN progression. Our investigation was designed to study whether circ_0123996 was associated with DN and aimed to find out the underlying mechanisms. ⋯ Here, Bach1 was confirmed as a target of miR-149-5p. Circ_0123996 upregulated Bach1 expression and restrained MMCs proliferation and fibrosis through sponging miR-149-5p. Thus, it was revealed that circ_0123996 was involved in DN via sponging miR-149-5p and modulating Bach1 expression.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The relentless spread and pathogenicity of the virus have become a global public health emergency. One of the striking features of this pandemic is the pronounced impact on specific regions and ethnic groups. ⋯ We found that the ACE1 II genotype frequency in a population was significantly negatively correlated with the number of SARS-CoV-2 cases. Similarly, the ACE1 II genotype was negatively correlated with the number of deaths due to SARS-CoV-2 infection. These data suggest that the ACE1 II genotype may influence the prevalence and clinical outcome of COVID-19 and serve as a predictive marker for COVID-19 risk and severity.
