The purpose of this study was to assess the protective effect of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) on acute lung injury (ALI) in rats induced by sepsis. Rat ALI model was reproduced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). All rats were randomly divided into three groups (n=50): control group (A), ALI group (B), and LMWH-treated group (C). ⋯ Similarly, treatment with LMWH dramatically diminished sepsis-induced neutrophil sequestration and markedly reduced the enhanced lung permeability. In the present study, LMWH administration inhibited the nuclear translocation of NF-κB in the lungs. These data suggest that LMWH attenuates inflammation and ameliorates lung pathology in CLP-induced sepsis in a rat model.

Temperature variation in the environment is a great challenge to organisms. Induction of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) is a common genetic mechanism to cope with thermal stress. The Glanville fritillary butterfly (Melitaea cinxia) is a model species in population and evolutionary biology, and its behavior and life history are greatly influenced by ambient temperature. ⋯ Acclimation at 35°C for three days before heat shock reduced expression of McHsp70 after heat shock. The maximum mRNA level of McHsp70s was reached in the first 2h after the heat shock. This study uncovers the complexity of the hsp70 system, and provides the valuable information for further temperature-related research in the Glanville fritillary butterfly.

Inherited diseases are the result of DNA sequence changes. In recessive diseases, the clinical phenotype results from the combined functional effects of variants in both copies of the gene. In some diseases there is often considerable variability of clinical presentation or disease severity, which may be predicted by the genotype. ⋯ Identical genotypes are listed multiple times if they were found in several patients, phenotypic descriptions and biochemical data are included as detailed as possible in view also of validating the proposed pathogenicity of these genotypes. For DHCR7 genetic modifier data (maternal APOE and ABCA1 genotypes) is also included. Databases are available at http://databases.lovd.nl/shared/genes and will be updated based on periodic literature reviews and submitted reports.

Tea polyphenols (TP) was investigated in rats for its protective effect on renal ischemia/reperfusion injury (RIRI). Rats were randomized into groups as follows: (I) sham group (n=10); (II) RIRI group (n=10); (III) RIRI+TP (100mg/kg) group (n=5); (IV) RIRI+TP (200mg/kg) group (n=5); (V) RIRI+TP+ Astragalus mongholicus aqueous extract (AMAE) (300 mg/kg+100mg/kg) group (n=5). For the IRI+TP groups, rats were orally given with tea polyphenols (100, 200 and 300 mg/kg body weight) once daily 10 days before induction of ischemia, followed by renal IRI. ⋯ Furthermore, tea polyphenol pretreatment significantly decreased renal epithelial tubular cell apoptosis induced by renal ischemia/reperfusion, alleviating renal ischemia/reperfusion injury. These results cumulatively indicate that tea polyphenol pretreatment could suppress the TLR4/NF-κB p65 signaling pathway, protecting renal tubular epithelial cells against ischemia/reperfusion-induced apoptosis, which implies that antioxidants may be a potential and effective agent for prevention of the ischemic/reperfusion injury through the suppression extrinsic apoptotic signal pathway induced by TLR4/NF-κB p65 signal pathway. Moreover, supplement of AMAE can increased renal protection effect of TP.

There are nearly 2000 cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFTR) mutations that cause cystic fibrosis (CF). These mutations are classified into six classes; on the one hand, the first three classes cause severe disease involvement in early childhood, on the other hand, the Class IV, V and VI mutations cause minor severe disease in the same age. Nowadays, with therapeutic advances in CF management and competence of pediatricians, physicians of adults have to deal with two groups of CF patients: (i) adults diagnosed in childhood with severe mutations and (ii) adults who initiated symptoms in adulthood and with Class IV, V and VI mutations. The aim of this study was to analyze adults from a clinical center, treated as CF disease, screening the CFTR genotype and evaluating the clinical characteristics. ⋯ The adults with CF diagnosed by sweat test have specific clinical and genotypic characteristics, being a population that should be studied to cause better future management. Some patients treated as CF disease by clinical symptoms, showed no disease, taking into account the sweat test and complete exon sequencing/MLPA screening.
