Comparative StudyCT findings in bronchiectasis: limited value in distinguishing between idiopathic and specific types.
The purpose of this study was to determine whether the pattern and distribution of bronchiectasis shown on CT scans can be used to discriminate between idiopathic cases and those with an identifiable cause. ⋯ Although differences in distribution and morphology of bronchiectasis may be seen on CT scans in groups of patients with bronchiectasis of different causes, CT findings applied to individual patients are of limited value in discriminating between idiopathic bronchiectasis and bronchiectasis of various known causes.

Comparative StudyFast MR angiography of the aortoiliac arteries and arteries of the lower extremity: value of bolus-enhanced, whole-volume subtraction technique.
MR angiography of the abdominal aorta and lower limb arteries has been hampered by the need to depict long segments of the arteries in short imaging times. To overcome these limitations, we combined fast acquisition of coronal sections with bolus-enhancement technique, subtraction, and whole-volume projection display. The purpose of this preliminary study was to determine the value of using this technique in patients with abdominal aortic lesions and atherosclerotic occlusive disease of the lower limbs. ⋯ Although further evaluation and technical improvements are required, our preliminary results indicate that bolus-enhanced subtraction MR angiography is a promising new method for fast abdominal and peripheral vascular imaging.

Comparative StudyDetection of knee hyaline cartilage defects using fat-suppressed three-dimensional spoiled gradient-echo MR imaging: comparison with standard MR imaging and correlation with arthroscopy.
A preliminary study was done to prospectively compare fat-suppressed three-dimensional spoiled gradient-echo (3D SPGR) MR imaging with standard MR imaging for detection of defects in the hyaline cartilage of the knee, using arthroscopy as the reference standard. ⋯ Fat-suppressed 3D SPGR imaging is more sensitive than standard MR imaging for the detection of abnormalities of the hyaline cartilage in the knee. Routine use of this technique may strengthen the role of MR imaging for noninvasive evaluation of internal derangements of the knee.

Comparative StudyDetection of circle of Willis aneurysms in patients with acute subarachnoid hemorrhage: a comparison of CT angiography and digital subtraction angiography.
The purpose of this study was to compare CT angiography with digital subtraction angiography (DSA) in the detection and measurement of intracranial aneurysms in patients with acute subarachnoid hemorrhage. ⋯ CT angiography shows potential in the detection and measurement of aneurysms in patients with acute subarachnoid hemorrhage when compared with DSA.

Anatomic distribution of venous thrombosis in patients with antiphospholipid antibody: imaging findings.
Antiphospholipid antibodies are immunoglobulins that cross-react with phospholipid within cell membranes. These antibodies have been associated with a hypercoagulable state manifested by early stroke, frequent arterial and venous thromboses, recurrent fetal loss, thrombocytopenia, and livedo reticularis (antiphospholipid syndrome). The purpose of this study was to determine the anatomic distribution of venous thrombosis in patients with antiphospholipid antibodies as seen on imaging examinations. ⋯ Deep veins of the leg were the most common site of venous thrombosis. The thoracic and abdominal venous system and the dural sinuses--unusual sites of thrombosis in the general population--are other common sites. Antiphospholipid antibodies should be suspected when thromboses are found in these locations in the absence of other known risk factors, or when found in combination with arterial thromboses or CNS ischemic disease in young or middle-aged patients.
