Neurological impairment is a big concern in the development of patients with congenital heart defects (CHD). A number of neuromarkers have been studied in search of a diagnostic or prognostic marker for brain injury during the vulnerable perioperative period. Our aim was to assess two novel neuromarkers, myelin basic protein (MBP) and protein Tau (pTau), as diagnostic markers for brain injury in perioperative period in children with CHD. ⋯ We evaluated MBP and pTau as potential biomarkers of brain injury in children with CHD undergoing cardiac surgery. Elevated postoperative pTau and MBP concentrations were observed in both groups. Elevated pTau values were associated with perioperative hypoxemia.

Sexual assault (SA) is a highly prevalent issue, with significant adverse health sequelae. Given that general practitioners (GPs) may serve as the first point of contact for many SA victims, their awareness of post-SA care and appropriate understanding of referral pathways to a sexual assault treatment unit (SATU) are critically important. This study evaluated GP trainees' knowledge of and comfort with post-SA care. ⋯ This study reveals that GP-trainees have had limited exposure to teaching on post-SA care. Additionally, significant improvements were observed following a 1-h didactic teaching session on post-SA care. Trainees demonstrated increased understanding of SATU referral pathways, understanding of immediate medical care after SA, including PEP and FE timelines.

Use the MDRD (Modification of Diet in Renal Disease) and 2021 CKD-EPI (Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration) equation void of race coefficients (CKD-EPICrea, CKD-EPICys-C, and CKD-EPICrea+Cys-C) to estimate the BV (Biological variation) of eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate) within 24 h in a healthy population to help explain future studies using eGFR in the context of a known BV. ⋯ We present data on the 24 h BV eGFR of the 2021 CKD-EPI equations. The presence of BV has impact on the interpretation of GFR results, affecting CKD disease grading. The RCVpos/neg differences were large among the individuals. When using eGFRs based on the MDRD and CKD-EPI equations, it is necessary to combine RCVpos/neg values before interpreting the results.

A cross-sectional study to evaluate the impact of early tracheostomy in management of neurosurgical patients.
Tracheostomy is a crucial procedure in the management of neurosurgical patients, and determining the appropriate timing for the intervention remains a contentious issue. While some experts advocate for early tracheostomy, others recommend a more conservative approach of closely monitoring the patient's condition before performing the procedure. ⋯ Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the optimal management of neurosurgical patients, with implications for clinical practice and patient outcomes.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients have been found to exhibit cortical asymmetry. Although asymmetries in cortical structures have been found in patients with AIS, there has been no research on how conservative treatments affect cerebellar functional organization. ⋯ The results of this study demonstrated that SBP exercises and Cheneau brace treatment can improve perceptual and cognitive asymmetry in the auditory system in AIS patients with thoracic major curve. Scoliosis-associated changes in the spine and postural control may affect auditory perception by causing adaptations in sensory and motor networks. Future studies are needed to examine the connectivity in brain regions related to motor control and auditory processing after conservative treatment.
