The major histopathologic characteristics in the vulvar vestibulitis syndrome.
In order to better understand the etiology of the vulvar vestibulitis syndrome, we examined the histopathologic parameters in vestibular mucosa, and compared the findings in specimens obtained from women with vulvar vestibulitis with those obtained from the control group. ⋯ Our results, therefore, support the existence of peripheral nerve hyperplasia in vestibular tissue obtained from patients with vulvar vestibulitis, and exclude the role of active inflammation or mast cells as probable etiologies for the vulvar vestibulitis syndrome.

Effects of menstrual cycle on postoperative analgesic requirements, agitation, incidence of nausea and vomiting after gynecological laparoscopy.
Several studies have suggested that the menstrual cycle has an impact on postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). No previous study has evaluated the effect of the menstrual cycle on the incidence of postoperative agitation and analgesic/antiemetic requirements. ⋯ In conclusion, we suggest that the scheduling of all surgical procedures according to the menstrual phase may serve to reduce the incidence of PONV and metamizol/ondansetron consumption and hospital costs.

Adenosine deaminase activity and its isoenzyme pattern in women with recurrent spontaneous abortions.
Normal pregnancy is characterized by suppressed cell-mediated immunity. Adenosine deaminase (ADA) is a purine metabolic enzyme enriched in trophoblast cells of the placenta. It is an early marker of trophoblast cell differentiation. ⋯ In women with RSA, mean PBLs tADA, ADA1 and ADA2 activities were significantly higher than those of non-pregnant women (p < 0.001, p < 0.05 and p < 0.05 respectively). The findings of this study show a marked increase of serum and PBLs ADA activities, which is derived from an increase of ADA2 and ADA1 activity in women with RSA. These changes reflect cell-mediated immunological changes.

Biography Historical ArticleMax Sänger - father of the modern caesarean section.
The major turning point in the development of the caesarean section appeared in 1882, when the German gynaecologist Max Sänger (1853-1903) suggested closing the uterine wound. Until this point, the wound was not sutured and so haemorrhage was a common cause of maternal death. ⋯ Sänger was one of the most renowned German gynaecologists at the end of the 19th century. He contributed to the entire fields of obstetrics and gynaecology, in particular in founding Monatsschrift für Geburtshülfe und Gynaekologie, the predecessor of this journal.
