Our objective was to determine whether a multisection technique, diffusion-weighted half-Fourier single-shot turbo spin-echo (HASTE) imaging, can compensate for the drawbacks common to other diffusion-weighted techniques; specifically, the need for echo-planar technology and the presence of susceptibility artifacts in areas close to the skull base. ⋯ Diffusion-weighted HASTE is equal to diffusion-weighted echo-planar imaging in the detection of early ischemia. Because of the absence of significant image distortions and other artifacts, diffusion-weighted HASTE permits fast multiplanar imaging in artifact-prone regions, such as the posterior fossa and the inferior frontal and temporal lobes. Diffusion imaging can be performed on conventional systems with strengths of 1.5 T that do not have echo-planar imaging capabilities.

Comparative StudyInversion-recovery echo-planar MR in adult brain neoplasia.
A T1-weighted multishot inversion-recovery (IR) echo-planar MR imaging (EPI) sequence was developed to improve intracranial tissue differentiation; its diagnostic utility was compared with that of conventional axial T1-weighted spin-echo and axial T2-weighted turbo spin-echo sequences. ⋯ Multishot IR-EPI is superior to conventional T1-weighted spin-echo imaging for parenchymal tissue contrast and lesion conspicuity, and is equal to T2-weighted turbo spin-echo imaging in sensitivity to pathologic entities.

Periganglionic foraminal steroid injections performed under CT control.
The purpose of our study was to evaluate the efficacy of direct intraforaminal steroid injections into the periganglionic space in the treatment of radicular pain. ⋯ Intraforaminal steroid injection is useful in the treatment of radicular pain, particularly in cases of foraminal degenerative stenosis.

Comparative StudySagittal MR of multiple sclerosis in the spinal cord: fast versus conventional spin-echo imaging.
We compared conventional spin-echo (CSE) with fast spin-echo (FSE) dual-echo MR images to determine which of these sequences was better able to depict spinal cord abnormalities in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). ⋯ Cardiac-triggered dual-echo FSE sequences are almost as good as CSE sequences for depicting spinal MS lesions. Therefore, in cases of established spinal MS, FSE techniques may be as effective as CSE techniques. Because sensitivity for subtle abnormalities is lower with FSE imaging, CSE remains the preferred technique for patients with suspected MS of the spinal cord.

Functional MR imaging of cortical activation of the cerebral hemispheres during motor tasks.
We used functional MR imaging to evaluate cortical activation in the precentral, central, and postcentral regions of the contralateral and ipsilateral cerebral hemispheres during left- and right-handed motor tasks. ⋯ Our results confirmed those of previous investigators that ipsilateral activation is more pronounced during left-sided movements than during right-sided movements. The variation in activation of the precentral, central, and postcentral subregions suggests different roles of the ipsilateral and contralateral hemispheres during motor tasks.
