Multicenter Study Comparative StudyGlycated hemoglobin as an indicator of social environmental stress among indigenous versus westernized populations.
This study assessed whether glycated hemoglobin concentration, an indicator of psychogenic stress, differs between indigenous populations and non-indigenous reference groups. ⋯ HbA(1c) concentrations are greater for indigenous than for non-indigenous groups. Social changes, low control, and living conditions associated with westernization may be inherently stressful at the biological level for indigenous populations in westernized countries.

Comparative StudyA comparison of the advertising and accessibility of cigars, cigarettes, chewing tobacco, and loose tobacco.
Tobacco products were compared in regard to their price, point-of-purchase advertising, accessibility to shoplifters, and rate of sale to minors. ⋯ Point-of-purchase advertising for cigars may be increasing, and their lower price makes them more affordable to youths. Food and Drug Administration regulations that limit point-of-purchase advertising for tobacco products should be expanded to include cigars. Manufacturers pay retailers for the placement of product displays that allow the package to be used as an advertisement without the appearance of the Surgeon General's warning. Generic packaging may be necessary to protect children from point-of-purchase advertising.

Smoking and acute myocardial infarction among women and men: A case-control study in Italy.
A few studies have compared the smoking-related risk of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) among women and men from the same population. A clear assessment of AMI risk among female smokers is now of major public health importance, given the large number of women who smoke. ⋯ Our study confirms that the relative risk of AMI is higher among female than among male smokers, and the difference is greater for heavy and long-term smokers.
