Controlled Clinical TrialAn intervention study of smoking cessation with feedback on genetic cancer susceptibility in Japan.
To evaluate whether feedback of genetic information regarding an L-myc polymorphism, identified as impacting on tobacco-related cancer risk, has an influence on smoking cessation, an intervention study was conducted. ⋯ Feedback regarding an L-myc polymorphism did not impact on smoking cessation overall but appeared to benefit smokers without cancer. In addition, gender could affect the response to the feedback.

Smoking predicts long-term mortality in stroke: The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer (EPIC)-Norfolk prospective population study.
: While the relationship between risk factors and stroke is well established, there is less information about the risk factors and survival after stroke. We examined the independent association between cardiovascular and modifiable lifestyle risk factors and subsequent mortality in people with stroke. ⋯ : Our findings may provide further empirical encouragement for smoking cessation after stroke.

Trends in smoking by birth cohorts born between 1900 and 1977 in Japan.
The present study aimed to elucidate the changing patterns of smoking among successive birth cohorts in Japan. ⋯ Smoking trends in Japanese men and women vary by birth cohorts. Smoking cessation should continue to be strongly promoted among men, although the younger generation has widely adopted a nonsmoking lifestyle. For women, efforts for preventing the onset of smoking, while necessary among the younger generation, should even be enhanced among middle-aged women.
