This paper will discuss the value of medical imaging in the detection and follow-up of bone marrow edema (BME), resulting from acute and chronic trauma in sports. MR imaging is the only imaging technique that allows direct evaluation of bone marrow edema in sports medicine. The use of fat suppressed T2-weighted or STIR images is particularly appropriate to detect bone marrow edema. ⋯ This may be helpful to analyze which joint supporting structures may be at risk. In the acute setting, plain radiography and CT scan may have an additional role in the detection of small avulsion fractures occurring at the site of minor areas of bone marrow edema. The clinical significance and natural history of bone marrow edema is still a matter of debate.

Multi-detector CT imaging (MDCT) becomes routine imaging modality in the assessment of the postoperative orthopedic patients with metallic instrumentation that degrades image quality at MR imaging. This article reviews the physical basis and CT appearance of such metal-related artifacts. It also addresses the clinical value of MDCT in postoperative orthopedic patients with emphasis on fracture healing, spinal fusion or arthrodesis, and joint replacement. MDCT imaging shows limitations in the assessment of the bone marrow cavity and of the soft tissues for which MR imaging remains the imaging modality of choice despite metal-related anatomic distortions and signal alteration.

Diagnostic value of multislice computed tomography angiography in coronary artery disease: a meta-analysis.
To perform a meta-analysis of the diagnostic value of multislice CT (MSCT) angiography in the detection of coronary artery disease (CAD) when compared to conventional coronary angiography. ⋯ Our meta-analysis showed that MSCT angiography has potential diagnostic accuracy in the detection of CAD. Diagnostic performance of MSCT angiography has been significantly improved with the latest 64-slice CT, with resultant high qualitative and quantitative diagnostic accuracy. 16-slice CT was limited in spatial resolution which makes it difficult to perform quantitative assessment of coronary artery stenoses.

Injuries to the small and large intestine from blunt trauma represent a defined clinical entity, often not easy to correctly diagnose in emergency but extremely important for the therapeutic assessment of patients. This article summarizes the MDCT spectrum of findings in intestinal blunt lesions, from functional disorders to hemorrhage and perforation.

Image-guided radiofrequency (RF) ablation is a minimally invasive therapy option in the treatment of primary and secondary hepatic malignancies. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging offers an accurate pre-interventional imaging having important impact on patient selection and planning of the ablation procedure. Peri-interventional imaging is used for targeting, monitoring, and controlling of the ablation procedure. ⋯ Post-interventional imaging is performed to assess treatment response after RF ablation and has prognostic impact, as an early detection of treatment failure, e.g. residual tumor tissue, enables immediate therapy. Nevertheless, differential diagnostic difficulties arise from benign periablational enhancement which may cover tumor tissue. Hence, further evaluation and improvement in the assessment of treatment response is essential.
