Randomized Controlled TrialComparison of the Anesthetic Efficiency of Lidocaine and Tramadol Hydrochloride in Orthodontic Extractions: A Split-Mouth, Prospective, Randomized, Double-Blind Study.
The aim of the present randomized controlled split-mouth clinical study was to evaluate and compare the clinical anesthetic efficacy of lidocaine and tramadol hydrochloride in orthodontic extractions. ⋯ The results of the present study suggest that using tramadol combined with epinephrine can be an alternative local anesthetic for maxillary first premolar tooth extractions in oral-maxillofacial surgery.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffect of Lavender Oil Inhalation on Reducing Presurgical Anxiety in Orthognathic Surgery Patients.
We hypothesized that lavender oil inhalation, before orthognathic surgery, would have an anxiolytic effect on patients. ⋯ The results of this study suggested that 1 hour of presurgical inhalation of 0.1-mL and 0.3-mL lavender oil diffusions in 120 mL of water did not have an anxiolytic effect on patients undergoing orthognathic surgery. Future studies will focus on different concentrations, different inhalation times, and higher study samples.

Randomized Controlled TrialCapnography Detection Using Nasal Cannula Is Superior to Modified Nasal Hood in an Open Airway System: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
The nasal cannula and modified nasal hood are methods used by oral and maxillofacial surgeons to detect expired carbon dioxide during procedural sedation in an open airway system. The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy of the detection of expired carbon dioxide between the nasal cannula and modified nasal hood. ⋯ When used for capnography for procedural sedation in an open airway system for routine OMS, the nasal cannula accurately recorded more breaths than the modified nasal hood.

Randomized Controlled TrialThe Effects of Music Listening During Extraction of the Impacted Mandibular Third Molar on the Autonomic Nervous System and Psychological State.
Pain, anxiety, and nervousness related to dental procedures can cause acute changes in the autonomic nervous system. Music is widely accepted as a relaxation method during dental treatment; however, its effects during dental treatment are unclear. The authors explored the effects of listening to music during extraction of the impacted mandibular third molar on the autonomic nervous system and the psychological state and hypothesized that listening to music would suppress sympathetic nervous activity and decrease anxiety. ⋯ This study suggested that listening to music while undergoing extraction of the impacted mandibular third molar suppresses activity of the sympathetic nerves during incision, flap reflection, bone removal, and separation of the tooth crown and relieves anxiety after treatment. Future studies will focus on the mechanisms involved and methods to prevent the onset of systemic incidents.

Randomized Controlled TrialOral Glucosamine Hydrochloride Combined With Hyaluronate Sodium Intra-Articular Injection for Temporomandibular Joint Osteoarthritis: A Double-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial.
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders occur in many people and osteoarthritis (OA) is a severe form of this disease. Glucosamine has been used to treat OA of the large joints for many years and has been proved effective. A double-blinded randomized controlled trial was designed to investigate the effectiveness and safety of oral glucosamine hydrochloride pills combined with hyaluronate sodium intra-articular injection in TMJ OA. ⋯ The results of this study suggest that, compared with hyaluronate sodium injection alone, glucosamine hydrochloride pills added to hyaluronate sodium injection had no meaningful effect on TMJ OA in the short-term but did relieve the pain caused by TMJ OA and improved TMJ functions in the long-term.
