Review Meta AnalysisStructural and functional neuroimaging studies of the suicidal brain.
Suicidality is a major challenge for today's health care. Evidence suggests that there are differences in cognitive functioning of suicidal patients but the knowledge about the underlying neurobiology is limited. Brain imaging offers the advantage of a non-invasive in vivo direct estimation of detailed brain structure, regional brain functioning and estimation of molecular processes in the brain. ⋯ We did not find studies measuring the binding potential of the noradrenalin or gamma amino butyric acid transporter or receptor in suicidal subjects. Several reports have suggested abnormalities of GABA neurotransmission in depression. During our literature search, we have focused on neuroimaging studies in suicidal populations, but in the absence of evidence in the literature on this group or when further collateral evidence is appropriate, this overview expands to results in impulsive aggressive or in depressed subjects.

Randomized Controlled TrialRepetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation reduces cigarette consumption in schizophrenia patients.
High-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) seemed to decrease tobacco consumption and craving in nicotine-dependent people without psychiatric disorder or otherwise healthy people. Even if the prevalence of cigarette smoking in schizophrenia patients is high and estimated to be between 45% and 88%, this technique has not been systematically studied in this indication in schizophrenia yet. ⋯ High-frequency rTMS over the left DLPFC has the ability to decrease the number of cigarettes smoked in schizophrenia patients.

Non-invasive brain stimulation in generalized anxiety disorder: A systematic review.
In the last years, several studies using non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques demonstrated that the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) plays a key role in the neurobiological bases of anxiety disorders. Both transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) applied primarily over the prefrontal cortex have been shown to modulate anxiety symptomatology and attention allocation in the generalized anxiety disorder. A literature search on PubMed and PsycINFO databases following PRISMA guidelines identified 4 TMS studies (one open-label study and three randomized trials with active/sham conditions) and one tDCS case report study that have applied NIBS in patients with GAD. ⋯ Overall, the findings would suggest that NIBS could ameliorate anxiety symptoms and that improvements remained stable in the follow-up. Although a limited number of NIBS studies has been conducted on patients with anxiety disorders, these techniques could represent promising tools for the study of neurofunctional basis of anxiety disorders. Further sham-controlled studies are needed to clarify the mechanisms of action of NIBS in order to optimize stimulation protocols and to verify their effectiveness for treating anxiety symptoms.

Cortical features of distinct developmental trajectories in patients with delusional infestation.
Although there is strong neuroimaging evidence that cortical alterations are a core feature of schizophrenia spectrum disorders, it still remains unclear to what extent such abnormalities occur in monothematic delusional disorders. In individuals with delusional infestation (DI), the delusional belief to be infested with pathogens, previous structural MRI studies have shown prefrontal, temporal, parietal, insular, thalamic and striatal gray matter volume changes. Differential contributions of cortical features of evolutionary and genetic origin (such as cortical thickness, area and folding) which may distinctly contribute to DI pathophysiology are unclear at present. ⋯ This study lends further support to the hypothesis that cortical features of distinct evolutionary and genetic origin differently contribute to the pathogenesis of delusional disorders. Regions in which atrophy was observed are part of neural circuits associated with perception, visuospatial control and self-awareness. The data are in line with the notion of a content-specific neural signature of DI.

Meta AnalysisMeta-analysis: aerobic exercise for the treatment of anxiety disorders.
This meta-analysis investigates the efficacy of exercise as a treatment for DSM-IV diagnosed anxiety disorders. ⋯ Current evidence does not support the use of aerobic exercise as an effective treatment for anxiety disorders as compared to the control conditions. This remains true when controlling for length of exercise sessions and type of anxiety disorder. Future studies evaluating the efficacy of aerobic exercise should employ larger sample sizes and utilize comparison interventions that control for exercise time.
