Observational StudyClinical course and predictive factors for complication of inferior vena cava filters.
The use of inferior vena cava (IVC) filters is associated with various complications. We aimed to elucidate the clinical course and predictive factors for complications of IVC filters, especially IVC penetration ⋯ In patients with a retrievable IVC filter, IVC penetration on CT was common, and significant IVC penetration was associated with a longer indwelling time of the IVC filter and a lesser IVC diameter.

Review Meta AnalysisEfficacy and safety of weight-adjusted heparin prophylaxis for the prevention of acute venous thromboembolism among obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
The bariatric surgical population is a particularly high risk population for VTE. It is unclear if standard (i.e. non-adjusted) thromboprophylaxis doses of low-molecular weight or unfractionated heparin provide adequate protection for obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery, or if higher doses are required. We sought to determine whether a weight based thromboprophylactic dosing regimen is safe and effective in the post-operative period for obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery. ⋯ Adjusting the dose of heparin products for thromboprophylaxis post-bariatric surgery seems to be associated with a lower rate of in hospital VTE compared to a strategy of not adjusting the dose, although this did not reach statistical significance. This practice does not lead to an increase in adverse major bleeding events.

Multicenter StudyVenous thromboembolism risk assessment, prophylaxis practices and interventions for its improvement (AVAIL-ME Extension Project, Iran).
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a major health issue worldwide. Data about VTE prophylaxis practices in developing countries are scarce. ⋯ Despite an overall improvement in VTE prevention, areas such as inappropriate use of VTE prophylaxis in a large number of patients, significant under-use of mechanical devices and guideline adherence require closer attention. VTE awareness education is beneficial in improving VTE prophylaxis in Iran.
