[Management of smoking in the perioperative period: survey of practices amongst anaesthetists in Lorraine].
Evidence shows that smoking leads to more perioperative complications. Smoking cessation before surgery reduces this postoperative morbidity. The French Society of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care published recommendations on this subject in 2005. We wanted to assess knowledge and practice amongst anaesthetists in Lorraine as regards the management of smoking in the perioperative period. ⋯ Despite published guidelines on the benefits of smoking cessation prior to surgery, Lorraine anaesthetists fail to systematically advise their patients in this regard. We believe there is a need to improve the management of these patients, either through the development of smoking cessation protocols locally or through patient referral to a specialised clinic.

The interest of tight glucose control in ICU is still debated. In France, no data are available regarding this therapy and the implementation of its guidelines. ⋯ Glucose control protocols are available in more than 80% ICUs but their implementation is still imperfect. However, the median glycemia meets international current recommendations. Severe hypoglycemia is a very rare event in ICU.

[Family's and/or relatives expectations concerning a patient emergently hospitalized into an intensive care unit after out-of-hospital medical care of by a samu team].
Emergency admission of a patient into an intensive care unit (ICU) is a source of stress for family and/or relatives. Expectations of family and/or relatives are important endpoints for the medical and paramedical team in charge of the patient, to better answer to their questions. ⋯ Information of families and/or relatives of a patient hospitalized in ICU is essential. Their expectations concern short, medium and long terms. At last, most of them prefers that information would be delivered by a physician, and using a simple and brief language.
