Exploring the home healthcare workforce in Alzheimer's disease and related dementias: Utilization and cost outcomes in US community dwelling older adults.
This study assessed home health care use associated with Alzheimer's Disease and related dementias (ADRD) in US community dwelling older adults, including workforce, intensity, and cost outcomes. ⋯ The study provides insight into the home care workforce. Of the professional workforce NPs were most often used and home care aides dominated the non-professional workforce. As expected, ADRD increased the likelihood and intensity of home health care utilization and associated direct home care costs significantly.

Review Meta AnalysisConsistent patterns in the inconsistent associations of Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), C-Reactive Protein (C-RP) and Interleukin 6 (IL-6) levels with delirium in surgical populations. A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Biomarkers for delirium could increase diagnostic accuracy and may help to identify pathological pathways. Until now study findings concerning cytokine levels have been inconsistent. ⋯ Despite the contradictory results concerning the association of IGF-1, C-RP and IL-6 with postoperative delirium, the present meta-analysis shows that there are certain patterns. IL-6 seems a consistent predictor for delirium in surgical samples.

Assessment of the association between dysphagia and sarcopenia among elderly patients with cirrhosis: Usefulness of the finger-ring test.
Sarcopenic dysphagia has become an urgent matter of debate in our aging society. However, little is known about the relationship between sarcopenia and dysphagia in patients with liver cirrhosis. Our aim was to assess sarcopenia and dysphagia among elderly patients with cirrhosis using two easy-to-use screening tests, i.e., the eating assessment tool-10 and the finger-ring test. ⋯ Sarcopenia, rather than the hepatic reserve function, is associated with dysphagia among elderly patients with cirrhosis. The finger-ring test might be useful in screening for dysphagia.

Outcome of fragility hip fractures in elderly patients: Does diabetes mellitus and its severity matter?
Diabetes mellitus (DM) and osteoporosis are both diseases of epidemic proportions with an increasing incidence worldwide. Fragility hip fractures (FHF) are associated with elevated morbidity, mortality, social burden and medical costs. The aim of this study was to determine whether patients with DM have worse medical and surgical outcomes following FHFs and whether the Diabetes Complications Severity Index (DCSI) can predict in-hospital complications and one-year mortality. ⋯ Our results emphasize the increased vulnerability of this patient population and the importance of specialized care during the peri-operative period of FHFs.
