Full haplotype-mismatched hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation: a phase II study in patients with acute leukemia at high risk of relapse.
Establishment of hematopoietic stem-cell (HSC) transplantation from mismatched relatives is feasible for patients with acute leukemia. As our original method of graft processing was unsuitable for large-scale clinical studies, we use automated devices for CD34+ cell purification. ⋯ Our transplantation procedure provides reliable, reproducible CD34+ cell purification, high engraftment rates, and prevention of GvHD. The mismatched-related transplant emerges as a viable, alternative source of stem cells for acute leukemia patients without matched donors and/or those who urgently need transplantation.

Evaluation of five radiation schedules and prognostic factors for metastatic spinal cord compression.
To study five radiotherapy (RT) schedules and potential prognostic factors for functional outcome in metastatic spinal cord compression (MSCC). ⋯ The five RT schedules provided similar functional outcome. The three more protracted schedules seemed to result in fewer in-field recurrences. To minimize treatment time, the following two schedules are recommended: 1 x 8 Gy for patients with poor predicted survival and 10 x 3 Gy for other patients. Results should be confirmed in a prospective randomized trial.

Phase II trial of postoperative adjuvant paclitaxel/carboplatin and thoracic radiotherapy in resected stage II and IIIA non-small-cell lung cancer: promising long-term results of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group--RTOG 9705.
To determine the overall survival, progression-free survival, and toxicity associated with concurrent paclitaxel/carboplatin and thoracic radiotherapy for completely resected patients with stage II and IIIA non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). ⋯ The mature results of this trial suggest an improved overall and progression-free survival in this group of resected NSCLC patients, compared with previously reported trials. A phase III trial comparing this treatment regimen with standard therapy seems warranted.
