Study of paclitaxel, etoposide, and cisplatin chemotherapy combined with twice-daily thoracic radiotherapy for patients with limited-stage small-cell lung cancer: a Radiation Therapy Oncology Group 9609 phase II study.
To determine the response rate, progression-free survival and overall survival, and toxicity of paclitaxel, etoposide, and cisplatin combined with accelerated hyperfractionated thoracic radiotherapy in patients with limited-disease (LD) small-cell lung cancer (SCLC). ⋯ Although this therapeutic regimen is effective in the treatment of patients with LD-SCLC, it is unlikely that the three-drug combination with thoracic radiation therapy will improve the survival times compared with the etoposide plus cisplatin chemotherapy regimen with thoracic radiation therapy in LD-SCLC patients.

Multicenter study of a frozen glove to prevent docetaxel-induced onycholysis and cutaneous toxicity of the hand.
Onycholysis and skin toxicity occur in approximately 30% of patients treated with docetaxel. We investigated the efficacy and safety of an Elasto-Gel (84400 APT Cedex, Akromed, France) frozen glove (FG) for the prevention of docetaxel-induced onycholysis and skin toxicity. ⋯ FG significantly reduces the nail and skin toxicity associated with docetaxel and provides a new tool in supportive care management to improve a patient's quality of life.

Impact of three courses of intensified CHOP prior to high-dose sequential therapy followed by autologous stem-cell transplantation as first-line treatment in poor-risk, aggressive non-hodgkin's lymphoma: comparative analysis of Dutch-Belgian Hemato-Oncology Cooperative Group Studies 27 and 40.
Timing, appropriate amount, and composition of treatment before high-dose therapy and autologous stem-cell transplantation (ASCT) in patients with poor-risk, aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) are still unknown. We conducted two consecutive multicenter phase II trials with up-front, high-dose, sequential chemotherapy and ASCT in poor-risk, aggressive NHL. Both trials had identical inclusion criteria and only differed in amount and duration of induction treatment before ASCT. ⋯ In patients with poor-risk, aggressive NHL, addition of intensified CHOP before up-front, high-dose, sequential therapy and ASCT significantly improved the duration of response and survival.

Short-course versus split-course radiotherapy in metastatic spinal cord compression: results of a phase III, randomized, multicenter trial.
Hypofractionated radiotherapy (RT) is often used in the treatment of metastatic spinal cord compression (MSCC). This randomized trial was planned to assess the clinical outcome and toxicity of two different hypofractionated RT regimens in MSCC. ⋯ Both hypofractionated RT schedules adopted were effective and had acceptable toxicity. However, considering the advantages of the short-course regimen in terms of patient convenience and machine time, it could become the RT regimen of choice in the clinical practice for MSCC patients.

To investigate the efficacy and safety of zoledronic acid for the treatment of bone metastases from breast cancer. ⋯ Zoledronic acid significantly reduced skeletal complications compared with placebo across multiple end points in Japanese women with bone metastases from breast cancer.
