The effects of regular consumption of a multiple micronutrient fortified milk beverage on the micronutrient status of school children and on their mental and physical performance.
Multiple micronutrient deficiencies exist in school going children in India and bridging the gap between nutrient intake and requirements is an effective way to combat the deficiencies. This study aimed to test the effect of a multi-micronutrient fortified malt and cocoa based milk beverage on the micronutrient status, cognition, physical performance and nutritional deficiencies of 7-10 years old south Indian children. A randomized, double blind placebo controlled study design was used with normal healthy children from low to middle income families, aged 7-10 years randomly assigned to receive either a multi-micronutrient fortified or an unfortified milk based control drink. ⋯ It also reduced anemia and the risk of deficiencies of iron, and B12, in apparently healthy children. Glutamine effects on heat shock protein 70 and interleukines 6 and 10: Randomized trial of glutamine supplementation versus standard parenteral nutrition in critically ill children.
To determine whether glutamine (Gln) supplementation would have a role modifying both the oxidative stress and the inflammatory response of critically ill children. ⋯ Glutamine supplementation in critically-ill children contributed to maintain high HSP-70 levels for longer. Glutamine supplementation had no influence on IL-10 and failed to show a significant reduction of IL-6 levels.

Decline in nutritional status is associated with prolonged length of stay in hospitalized patients admitted for 7 days or more: A prospective cohort study.
Reducing length of stay (LOS) is a priority for hospitals but patients' decline in nutritional status may have a negative impact. The aims of the study were to assess the change in nutritional status during hospitalization and determine if its decline is associated with prolonged LOS. ⋯ In-hospital decline in nutritional status as assessed by SGA or weight loss ≥5% is associated with prolonged LOS independently of factors reflecting demographics, living accommodations and disease severity. This suggests a role for nutrition care in reducing LOS.

Identifying critically-ill patients who will benefit most from nutritional therapy: Further validation of the "modified NUTRIC" nutritional risk assessment tool.
Better tools are needed to assist in the identification of critically ill patients most likely to benefit from artificial nutrition therapy. Recently, the Nutrition Risk in Critically ill (NUTRIC) score has been developed for such purpose. The objective of this study was to externally validate a modified version of the NUTRIC score in a second database. ⋯ The NUTRIC scoring system is externally validated and may be useful in identifying critically ill patients most likely to benefit from optimal amounts of macronutrients when considering mortality as an outcome.

Validation data for currently available indirect calorimeters is limited. The purpose of this investigation was to validate a newer indirect calorimeter system (Vmax Encore) against a criterion device (Deltatrac Metabolic Monitor) in spontaneously breathing mode. ⋯ The Vmax Encore indirect calorimeter is a precise instrument for measuring VO2 and RMR in spontaneously breathing individuals, but it is biased toward lower values compared to the Deltatrac.
