Early use of parenteral nutrition (early-PN), as compared with withholding it for one week (late-PN), in the PICU, has shown to slow down recovery from critical illness and impair long-term development of 6 neurocognitive/behavioural/emotional functions assessed 2 years later. Given that key steps in brain maturation occur at different times during childhood, we hypothesised that age at time of exposure determines long-term developmental impact of early-PN. ⋯ Critically ill children aged 29 days to 11 months at time of exposure were identified as most vulnerable to developmental harm evoked by early-PN. CLINICAL TRIALS.GOV: NCT01536275.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
Simo decoction versus domperidone suspension for post-pyloric spiral nasoenteric tube placement: A multicenter, randomized, non-inferiority trial.
Leveraging prokinetics to facilitate trans-pyloric migration is a conventional strategy. However, due to restrictions on the use of domperidone suspension, oral prokinetics is relatively modest. The study aims to assess the effectiveness of simo decoction as an alternative to domperidone suspension in facilitating post-pyloric placement of spiral nasoenteric tubes. ⋯ Non-inferiority of simo decoction to domperidone suspension was not confirmed in facilitating post-pyloric placement of spiral nasoenteric tubes. Registration: The trial was registered with the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry at http://www.chictr.org.cn (registration number ChiCTR-INR-17011311).

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study
Application of enhanced recovery after surgery during the perioperative period in infants with Hirschsprung's disease - A multi-center randomized clinical trial.
Various enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) guidelines have been established for several kinds of adult surgeries. While the guidelines for pediatric surgeries remained to be explored. The aim of the study was to prospectively evaluate the safety and efficacy of an ERAS protocol for Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR) infants undergoing pull-through procedures. ⋯ Implementation of the ERAS protocol in infants undergoing HSCR pull-through operations is safe and efficient. The ERAS protocol is worthy of recommendation.

Malnutrition associated with nutrition impact symptoms and localization of the disease: Results of a multicentric research on oncological nutrition.
Malnutrition in cancer is an independent factor associated with negative clinical outcomes. The aim was to evaluate the prevalence and independent risk factors for malnutrition in hospitalized cancer patients using the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA). ⋯ Malnutrition is highly prevalent in cancer patients in Brazil, and is associated with nutritional impact symptoms, cancer site and age ≥65 years.

Malnutrition is common in patients with hip fractures, and elderly patients with hip fractures lose functional independence and often fail to recover previous functional status. The aim of this study was to determine whether pre-fracture nutritional status predicts functional status of patients with hip fracture at discharge from acute hospitals. ⋯ Pre-fracture nutritional status was a significant independent predictor for functional status at discharge during the acute phase, warranting early assessment of nutritional status and early intervention for successful postoperative rehabilitation.
