Plasma phospholipid saturated fatty acids and heart failure risk in the Physicians' Health Study.
Previous studies have suggested that some plasma phospholipid saturated fatty acids (SFA) are associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease and hypertension, major risk factors for heart failure (HF). However, little is known about the association between SFA and HF. This study examines associations of individual plasma phospholipid SFA with HF risk in US male physicians. ⋯ Our data suggested no association between plasma phospholipid SFAs and HF in US male physicians.

Early nasogastric tube feeding versus nil per os in mild to moderate acute pancreatitis: a randomized controlled trial.
Nasojejunal tube feeding is a standard of care in patients with predicted severe acute pancreatitis (AP) and several recent trials suggested that nasogastric tube feeding (NGT) is as safe and efficient as nasojejunal tube feeding in these patients. The aim was to investigate whether NGT presents any benefit to patients with mild to moderate AP. ⋯ NGT commenced within 24 h of hospital admission is well tolerated in patients with mild to moderate acute pancreatitis. Further, when compared with NPO, it significantly reduces the intensity and duration of abdominal pain, need for opiates, and risk of oral food intolerance, but not overall hospital stay.

Nissen fundoplication in children with cerebral palsy: influence on rate of gastric emptying and postprandial symptoms in relation to protein source in caloric liquid meals.
The aim was to study the influence of Nissen fundoplication on rate of gastric emptying and postprandial symptoms in relation to protein source in liquid meals in children with cerebral palsy. ⋯ Compared with cerebral palsy-children without Nissen fundoplication, those with Nissen fundoplication have postprandial symptoms more frequently after receiving a rapid emptying meal. Gastric emptying alone, however, does not seem to explain the symptom occurrence. ClinicalTrials.gov: UUSKBK 28200706.

Parenteral fish oil as a pharmacological agent to modulate post-operative immune response: a randomized, double-blind, and controlled clinical trial in patients with gastrointestinal cancer.
Fish oil-based lipid emulsions (FOLEs) have shown post-operative immunological and clinical benefits in parenteral nutrition. ⋯ Short-term pre-operative infusion of FO alone improves the post-operative immune response of gastrointestinal cancer patients without significantly changing post-operative infections or length of ICU and hospital stay. Supplemental intravenous n-3 fatty acids and n-3 fatty acid status and outcome in critically ill elderly patients in the ICU receiving enteral nutrition.
N-3 fatty acids (FA) may have benefits in ICU patients. The aims were to identify whether FA status is altered in critical illness and to evaluate the effect of supplemental intravenous n-3 FA on plasma FA status and clinical outcome in ICU patients receiving enteral nutrition. ⋯ Critically ill patients may have altered plasma FA profiles. A higher total n-3 FA and docosahexaenoic acid content in plasma PC is associated with survival and improved gas exchange.
