Comparative Study
Macular features from spectral-domain optical coherence tomography as an adjunct to indirect ophthalmoscopy in retinopathy of prematurity.
To compare vitreoretinal pathology imaged with portable handheld spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) to conventional indirect ophthalmoscopic examination in neonates undergoing screening for retinopathy of prematurity. ⋯ Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography provides new information about the premature infant retina that is of unknown importance relative to visual development and acuity. As used in this study, SD-OCT does not replace indirect ophthalmoscopy for evaluation of retinopathy of prematurity.

Visual disturbances after high-altitude exposure were first reported in 1969. Manifestations may include retinal hemorrhage, papilledema, and vitreous hemorrhage. ⋯ Various high-altitude retinopathies were observed in the experienced climbers of this study. As high-altitude pursuits become more popular, attention should be paid to the increasing prevalence of high-altitude retinopathy.

To investigate the effect of calcium channel blockers, spider toxins, on cell viability and the glutamate content of ischemic retinal slices. ⋯ Spider toxins reduced glutamate content and cell death of retinal ischemic slices.

Comparative Study
Comparative study of 50 early- or late-onset retinal detachments after open or closed globe injury.
To compare initial findings and final prognosis of retinal detachments (RDs) secondary to open or closed ocular injuries. ⋯ Final prognosis was similar in eyes with RD secondary to open and closed globe injuries. The surgical technique depended mainly on lens status, type of retinal tear (dialysis and giant retinal tear), and the presence of preoperative proliferative vitreoretinopathy. Final prognosis (visual acuity ≥20/40) was associated with initial visual acuity >20/200 and macula-on status.
