Complications of ganciclovir implant surgery in patients with cytomegalovirus retinitis: the Ganciclovir Cidofovir Cytomegalovirus Retinitis Trial.
To describe the complications of ganciclovir implant surgery in patients with cytomegalovirus retinitis. ⋯ Ganciclovir implant surgery in patients with AIDS and cytomegalovirus retinitis was associated with a low risk of serious complications in the first 60 days after surgery. Vitreous hemorrhage was the most commonly observed complication and resolved in all cases.

Intraoperative ketorolac and eye pain after viteoretinal surgery: a prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled study.
To compare the efficacy of one intraoperative dose of intravenous ketorolac tromethamine to saline placebo in controlling postoperative eye pain, nausea, and sedation following vitreoretinal surgery. ⋯ Ketorolac tromethamine is an effective nonnarcotic choice for postoperative pain control following vitreoretinal surgery. Pain control is particularly important in this group of patients, whose compliance with postoperative procedures and positioning may significantly affect surgical outcome.

Preemptive analgesia in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment surgery: is it effective?
To evaluate the efficacy of preemptive analgesia in surgical repair of retinal detachment (RD) using scleral buckle and cryopexy under general anesthesia. ⋯ The use of sub-Tenon block as preemptive analgesia after induction of general anesthesia and before the start of rhegmatogenous RD surgical repair was effective in reducing postoperative pain and analgesic requirements compared with an unblocked group. The use of sub-Tenon block was also effective in reducing intraoperative incidence of oculocardiac reflex and postoperative incidence of vomiting.

Comparison of pH-adjusted bupivacaine with a mixture of non-pH-adjusted bupivacaine and lignocaine in primary vitreoretinal surgery.
To compare the efficacy of alkalinized bupivacaine with that of a mixture of nonalkalinized bupivacaine and lignocaine for local anesthesia in primary vitreoretinal surgery. ⋯ Alkalinized 0.5% bupivacaine provides better quality of anesthesia than does the mixture of nonalkalinized 0.5% bupivacaine and 2% lignocaine for patients undergoing primary vitreoretinal surgery.
