Body mass index and outcome of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients not treated by targeted temperature management.
Obesity has been demonstrated to increase the risk of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) and may influence the quality and effectiveness of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Our aim was to investigate the association between body mass index (BMI) and the outcome of OHCA victims not treated by targeted temperature management. ⋯ Survival to ICU admission and ICU discharge were higher in the eBMI group.

Exploring the best predictors of fluid responsiveness in patients with septic shock.
To evaluate respiratory variations in carotid and brachial peak velocity and other hemodynamic parameters to predict responsiveness to fluid challenge. ⋯ Ultrasound assessment of ΔIVC and ΔVpeak brach, especially ΔCDPV, could predict fluid responsiveness and might be recommended as a continuous and noninvasive method to monitor functional hemodynamic parameter in mechanically ventilated patients with septic shock.

Acute otitis media is a common diagnosis encountered by emergency medicine providers. With appropriate antibiotic treatment, patients with otitis media, in general, have minimal long-term sequela from their underlying infection (Limb et al., 2017 [1]). ⋯ We report a case of an 8-year-old that developed Gradenigo's syndrome, a condition characterized by the triad of otitis media, facial pain in the distribution of the trigeminal nerve, and abducens nerve palsy (Yeung and Lustig, 2016; Janjua et al., 2016; Kantas et al., 2010; Motamed and Kalan, n.d.; Vita Fooken Jensen et al., 2016 [2-6]). Signs and symptoms are often subtle, so a high-level of suspicion is required in order not to miss this potentially fatal process.

The effect of the apneic period on the respiratory physiology of patients undergoing intubation in the emergency department.
We sought to examine the physiological impact the apneic period has on the respiratory physiology of patients undergoing intubation in the emergency department and whether DAO, the delivery of 15L oxygen by nasal cannula during apnea, can affect the development of respiratory acidosis. ⋯ Post-RSI EtCO2 increased as apnea times were prolonged. DAO may alter this trend. Statistically significant changes in pH and PaCO2 (mean differences of 0.15 and 12.5, respectively) occurred in the group of patients who had mean apnea times of >60s but not in those with apnea times <60s.

Organic phosphor compounds are highly toxic and life-threatening compounds that are widely used in agriculture, households and gardens worldwide. While oral intakes are observed frequently, toxic effects can also be seen through contract or inhalation. ⋯ Our second goal was to present the current multiple treatment methods, such as fast general support, antidote treatment, lipid emulsion treatment, and plasmapheresis along with the literature. Third, we aimed to emphasize that with these treatments, patients' intensive care needs, intermediate symptoms, and hospitalization periods can be decreased and thus mortality and morbidity increase can be prevented.
