Bystander CPR in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest: the role of limited English proficiency.
The proportion of non-native English speakers is increasing in the United States. We sought to determine if limited English proficiency in callers to 9-1-1 for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is associated with provision of bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and delays in telephone-assisted CPR. ⋯ In this observational study of dispatcher-identified cardiac arrest, limited English proficiency in 9-1-1 callers was associated with less frequent provision of bystander CPR and delays in arrest recognition and implementation of telephone CPR, underscoring the health challenges and potential disparities of pre-hospital care related to limited English proficiency.

A pilot study of mechanical chest compressions with the LUCAS™ device in cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
The LUCAS™ device has been shown to improve organ perfusion during cardiac arrest in experimental studies. In this pilot study the aim was to compare short-term survival between cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) performed with mechanical chest compressions using the LUCAS™ device and CPR performed with manual chest compressions. The intention was to use the results for power calculation in a larger randomised multicentre trial. ⋯ In this pilot study of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest patients we found no difference in early survival between CPR performed with mechanical chest compression with the LUCAS™ device and CPR with manual chest compressions. Data have been used for power calculation in a forthcoming multicentre trial.

Comparison of optic laryngoscope Airtraq(®) and Miller laryngoscope for tracheal intubation during infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Recent resuscitation guidelines for infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) emphasize that all rescuers should minimize interruption of chest compressions, even for endotracheal intubation. We compared the utility of the Miller laryngoscope (Mil) with Airtraq (ATQ) during chest compression in an infant manikin. ⋯ We conclude that ATQ performed better than Mil for endotracheal intubation during chest compression in infant simulations managed by expert doctors.

Novel target volume marked adult bag to deliver accurate tidal volume for paediatric and adolescent resuscitation.
To overcome limitations of inaccurate tidal volume (TV) delivery by conventional selfinflating paediatric and adult bags during paediatric and adolescent resuscitation, we designed a novel target volume marked bag (TVMB) with four compression points marked on an adult bag surface. The aim of this study was to evaluate the TVMB in delivering preset TV. ⋯ TVMB could deliver accurate TV in various target volume ranges for paediatric and adolescent resuscitation.

Updated teaching techniques improve CPR performance measures: a cluster randomized, controlled trial.
The first-aid training necessary for obtaining a drivers license in Austria has a regulated and predefined curriculum but has been targeted for the implementation of a new course structure with less theoretical input, repetitive training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and structured presentations using innovative media. ⋯ Motivation and self-confidence as well as skill retention after six months were shown to be dependent on the teaching methods and the time for practical training. Courses may be reorganized and content rescheduled, even within predefined curricula, to improve course outcomes.
