The mathematical method used to calculate chest compression (CC) rate during cardiopulmonary resuscitation varies in the literature and across device manufacturers. The objective of this study was to determine the variability in calculated CC rates by applying four published methods to the same dataset. ⋯ Using four published methods for calculating CC rate, average rates were similar, but 7% of events changed Guideline-compliant status. These data suggest that a uniform calculation method (interruption ≥ 1 s) should be adopted to decrease variability in resuscitation science.

Our study aimed to identify a strategy that maximizes survival upon hospital discharge or 30-days post out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) in Singapore for fixed investments of S$1, S$5, or S$10 million. Four strategies were compared: (1) no additional investment; (2) reducing response time via leasing of more ambulances; (3) increasing number of people trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR); and (4) automated external defibrillators (AED). ⋯ Investing in AEDs had the most gain in survival.

Defibrillation in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is increasingly performed by using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Therefore presence of a shockable rhythm is recurrently only documented by the AED. However, AED-information is rarely available to the treating physician. ⋯ In 11-13% of OHCAs, a shockable rhythm is only seen on the AED-ECG. Adequate transfer to the physician of vital AED-information is essential but not always accomplished.

Controlled sequential elevation of the head and thorax (CSE) during active compression-decompression (ACD) CPR with an impedance threshold device (ITD) augments cerebral (CerPP) and coronary (CorPP) perfusion pressures. The optimal CSE is unknown. ⋯ By optimizing controlled sequential elevation timing, CerPP values achieved 50% of baseline within less than 2.5 minutes and >80% of baseline after 7 minutes of CPR. This novel CPR approach rapidly restored CerPPs to near normal values non-invasively and without vasopressors.
