Outcome of Benign Acute Childhood Myositis: The Experience of 2 Large Tertiary Care Pediatric Hospitals.
The aims of the study were to determine the evolution of benign acute childhood myositis in children and to assess the relationship between creatine phosphokinase (CPK) values and myoglobinuria. ⋯ Acute childhood myositis is a predominantly benign disease. Neurological examination is usually normal and rhabdomyolysis is rare. Although severe pathological comorbid conditions must be excluded, a complete history and examination, coupled with simple blood and urine tests, can help minimize unnecessary diagnostic investigations.

ReviewPediatric Emergency Department Return: A Literature Review of Risk Factors and Interventions.
Children discharged from emergency departments (EDs) are often at risk for ED return. The objective was to identify risk factors and interventions to mitigate or prevent ED return among this patient population. ⋯ Several patient and visit characteristics can help predict children at risk for ED return. Although some interventions are successful at improving postdischarge follow-up, most did not reduce ED returns.

Case ReportsA Rare Cause of Metabolic Acidosis: Fatal Transdermal Methanol Intoxication in an Infant.
Oral methanol intoxication is common, but dermal intoxication is rare. We report a previously healthy 19-month-old female infant admitted to the emergency department (ED) with vomiting and tonic-clonic seizure. On physical examination, she was comatose and presented signs of decompensated shock with Kussmaul breathing. ⋯ The patient died after 7 days. Although methanol intoxication occurs predominantly in adults, it must be considered in children with high-anion gap metabolic acidosis. This case report demonstrates that fatal transdermal methanol intoxication can occur in children, and it is the second report in the English literature of transdermal methanol intoxication in an infant.

Case ReportsDeep Vein Thrombus Occurring Immediately After Blunt Abdominal Trauma.
A 13-year-old adolescent girl with blunt abdominal injury was transferred to our hospital. Enhanced computed tomography (CT) showed not only retroperitoneal hematoma around the inferior vena cava and left common iliac vein but also thrombus extending from the left common iliac vein to the femoral vein. ⋯ She was successfully treated with the appropriate start time and control of anticoagulation therapy based on careful evaluation of her general condition.

Evaluation of Anaphylaxis Management in a Pediatric Emergency Department.
In 2006, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease established evidence-based treatment guidelines for anaphylaxis. The purpose of our study was to evaluate provider adherence to guidelines-based management for anaphylaxis in a tertiary care pediatric emergency department (ED). ⋯ Provider use of IM epinephrine has improved since anaphylaxis guidelines were published. However, more provider education is needed to improve overall adherence of guidelines in a tertiary care pediatric ED.
