Observational StudyAssociation of metabolic syndrome and chronic kidney disease with atrial fibrillation: A nationwide population-based study in Korea.
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are significant risk factors for incident atrial fibrillation (AF). Few studies have reported the synergistic effect of MetS and CKD on development of AF. We investigated the individual and synergistic effects of MetS and CKD on the risk of incident AF. ⋯ The combination of MetS and CKD showed a high risk of development of AF in a large-scale nationwide cohort. Further studies are warranted to determine whether pharmacological and/or lifestyle interventions can control/manage these modifiable risk factors to reduce the risk of development of AF.

Inadequate fat or carbohydrate intake was associated with an increased incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Korean adults: A 12-year community-based prospective cohort study.
Few studies have focused on the relationship between long-term fat intake and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) risk in Asia where fat intake is relatively lower than the Western countries. We examined association of dietary fat and carbohydrate intake with incidence of T2D among Korean adults. ⋯ A very-low-fat or very-high-carbohydrate intake may increase the T2D risk and might be associated with lower intake of various nutrients and unbalanced macronutrient composition.

Impact of the definition of osteoarthritis and of the timing of its onset on the association between type 2 diabetes mellitus and osteoarthritis: Clinical Practice Research Datalink.
In a previous case-control study in a large primary care database, the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) was associated with a decreased rate of total joint replacement (TJR). As this was in contrast to the hypothesis, selection bias due to the used definition of osteoarthritis (OA) or misclassification of the onset of OA were raised as possible explanations. We therefore aimed to explore the effect of the definition of OA, and hypothesized timing of its onset on the association between T2DM and OA. ⋯ When examining the association between T2DM and OA, the use of TJR as a proxy for OA resulted in a 20% lower estimate than the OA diagnosis.
