Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyComparison of injection pain of articaine and lidocaine in eyelid surgery.
To compare the pain induced by tissue infiltration of lidocaine 2% with epinephrine 1:100,000 versus articaine 4% with epinephrine 1:100,000 for eyelid surgery. ⋯ In this study, infiltration of articaine was less painful than lidocaine for eyelid surgery, making articaine an attractive alternative for local anesthesia.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyEfficacy of fentanyl or alfentanil in suppressing reflex sneezing after propofol sedation and periocular injection.
A sneeze reflex may occur after propofol sedation and during periocular injections. Unexpected movement from sneezing can result in needle injury to the globe or optic nerve, or hematoma. We investigate the efficacy of concomitant fentanyl or alfentanil in reducing sneezing following propofol and during periocular injections. ⋯ Fentanyl or alfentanil suppressed sneezing after propofol sedation and eyelid anesthetic injection. These medications may prevent needle injury.

Randomized Controlled TrialPain associated with local anesthetic injection in eyelid procedures: Comparison of microprocessor-controlled versus traditional syringe techniques.
To evaluate the pain associated with local infiltration of the eyelid, using a microprocessor-controlled delivery system (CompuMed, using the Wand), as compared with traditional manual syringe infiltration technique. ⋯ The Wand was effective at significantly reducing the pain associated with local anesthetic infiltration in minor eyelid surgical procedures. Patients appear to feel pain from the initial needle stick but not during the actual injection.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialLocal versus general anesthesia for external dacryocystorhinostomy in young patients.
To compare the effectiveness, complications, and patient acceptance of local anesthesia with general anesthesia in young patients for external dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR). ⋯ Local anesthesia in DCR is safe and comfortable when proper anatomical approach to nerve blocks is performed correctly. Local anesthesia in young patients undergoing external DCR is a good alternative because it is cost-effective and it eliminates the complications of general anesthesia.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialEffect of preemptive retrobulbar analgesia on perioperative hemodynamics and postoperative pain after enucleation.
To determine the preemptive pain and hemodynamic effects of preincisional retrobulbar analgesia in enucleation. ⋯ Preemptive retrobulbar analgesia was associated with improved intraoperative hemodynamics during enucleation and a trend toward reduced pain on entry in the recovery room and fewer pain rescues in the early postoperative period. A trend toward reduced pain severity in the early postoperative period was observed in those patients without daily preoperative analgesic use.
