Influence of levosimendan on organ dysfunction in patients with severely reduced left ventricular function undergoing cardiac surgery.
Levosimendan is an inotropic drug with organ-protective properties due to its activation of mitochondrial K(ATP) channels. This prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study investigated whether administration of levosimendan prior to cardiopulmonary bypass could reduce organ dysfunction and influence subsequent secondary endpoints. ⋯ These preliminary results show that timely perioperative levosimendan treatment is feasible, has a favourable safety profile safe and may help to prevent low cardiac output syndrome. However, organ function was not preserved. Further studies, using larger sample sizes, are required.

The analgesic efficacy and safety of nefopam in patient-controlled analgesia after cardiac surgery: A randomized, double-blind, prospective study.
The efficacy and side-effects of nefopam were prospectively compared with those of fentanyl for patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) following cardiac surgery. ⋯ PCA with nefopam alone provides suitable postoperative analgesia after cardiac surgery.

To test the hypothesis that there would be better clinical outcomes following the treatment of patients with acute lung injury (ALI) using noninvasive positive-pressure mechanical ventilation (NIPPV) delivered via a complex critical care ventilator compared with a conventional mini-ventilator. ⋯ The findings of this present study suggest that there were more satisfactory clinical outcomes following the treatment of patients with ALI when NIPPV was delivered using a complex critical care ventilator compared with a conventional mini-ventilator.

To examine the cooling effectiveness of a rapid infusion system (RIS) during induction of therapeutic hypothermia. ⋯ RIS preserves the cold energy of fluid more effectively than pressure bag or control. RIS allows for rapid infusion at a constant pressure and can be easily applied in an emergency setting.

To evaluate the efficiency of ventilation using a novel chin-lift mask compared with an oropharyngeal airway (OPA) with EC-clamp technique in obese patients. ⋯ The chin-lift mask provided a patent airway and better quality mask ventilation than an OPA with EC-clamp technique in obese patients.
