Subjective difficulty of each stage of phacoemulsification cataract surgery performed by basic surgical trainees.
To measure the relative difficulty of each stage of phacoemulsification surgery performed by basic surgical trainees. ⋯ Trainee surgeons found phacoemulsification and capsulorhexis the most difficult stages of cataract surgery early in the learning curve. More time can be dedicated to mastering these steps in the wet lab.

Effect of growth factors on proliferation and expression of growth factor receptors in a human lens epithelial cell line.
To investigate the effect of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), epidermal growth factor (EGF), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), and transforming growth factor beta 2 (TGFbeta2) on proliferation of a human lens epithelial cell line (HLEC-SRA 01/04); the effect of bFGF and TGFbeta2 on proliferation of human lens epithelial cells (HLECs); and the expression of bFGF, EGF, IGF-1, and TGFbeta2 receptors in an HLEC-SRA 01/04 cell line. ⋯ The data showed that bFGF and TGFbeta2 are strong mitogens for HLEC. The HLEC-SRA 01/04 cell line derived from HLEC reacted to growth factors, with cell proliferation only to a lesser extent. Such quiescence of these cells, when compared with cells in primary culture, cannot be explained by the lack of respective receptors for growth factors. Further investigation of growth factor-induced responses of both cell types will provide new insight into the proliferative processes involved in postoperative secondary cataract formation.

Incidence and causes of ocular surgery cancellations in an ambulatory surgical center.
To report the incidence and analyze potentially preventable causes of ocular surgery cancellations. ⋯ Among ambulatory ophthalmic surgeries, there was a higher incidence of late cancellations in pediatric cases. Late cancellation rates were highest in cases scheduled in the winter, especially in February. Of the reasons documented for cancellations, 41% were considered "preventable" with proper preoperative counseling and instructions. The costs of late cancellations to the particular institution are estimated to be at least $100 000 per year, or nearly 1 month of scheduled surgeries in a 2-year period.

Ophthalmology and vision science research: Part 3: avoiding writer's block--understanding the ABCs of a good research paper.
Completion of a scientific manuscript for submission to a peer-reviewed journal is a daunting task for clinicians and scientists early in their careers. In an ongoing series, this third article is the first of 2 related articles that deal with the basics of producing a high-quality research manuscript. Although ophthalmology and vision science are the principal focus of this series, the general concepts essential to producing a quality manuscript are applicable to diverse fields of research. ⋯ Internationally agreed guidelines are identified to guide this process. The importance of choosing the correct journal for a specific article and the nature of basic citation indices are discussed. The article concludes by elaborating and contrasting different scientific writing styles and emphasizing the considerable importance of developing a representative title and applying clarity and appropriate structure to the abstract.
