Chronic rhinosinusitis increased the risk of chronic periodontitis: a population-based matched-cohort study.
Although chronic periodontitis (CP) and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) both share immunological disturbances as pathological factors, no prior study has investigated the risk for CP among patients with CRS. This study set out to provide an estimation of risk by utilizing a cohort study design to leverage the statistical power of a population-based dataset in Taiwan. ⋯ This study detected an increased risk for CP among patients suffering from CRS. CRS patients should be alerted to pay particular attention to their oral hygiene practices to prevent both CP and its downstream sequelae.

Postoperative hemorrhage following adenoidectomy.
To examine postoperative hemorrhage following adenoidectomy. ⋯ Adenoidectomy appears to be primarily a procedure performed in childhood. The rate of R1 hemorrhage following adenoidectomy is one in 200 (0.5%) and is similar to the R1 hemorrhage rate for tonsillectomy. R2 hemorrhage following an adenoidectomy appears to be extremely rare. In children, the risk of a serious primary hemorrhage following an adenotonsillectomy is double that of either procedure when performed alone.

Hemorrhage following tonsil surgery: a multicenter prospective study.
Postoperative hemorrhage as a serious complication after tonsillectomy (TE), tonsillotomy (TO), or adenoidectomy (AE) is covered in many studies, using rather inconsistent measurement methods. We introduce a new classification for the severity of postoperative hemorrhage and investigate risk factors for the frequency and severity of bleeding episodes. ⋯ The occurrence of a postoperative minor bleeding episode increases the risk of a subsequent severe bleeding episode.

To assess the level of functioning in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) using the the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF). ⋯ The ICF identifies problems in functioning in patients with HNC comprehensively. The results emphasize the importance of contextual environmental factors. In particular, environmental factors referring to interpersonal support should be more strongly included in rehabilitation plans for HNC.

Acute radiographic workup of blunt temporal bone trauma: maxillofacial versus temporal bone CT.
To evaluate the radiographic workup of blunt temporal bone trauma and determine the utility of maxillofacial computed tomography (CT) versus temporal bone CT in identifying carotid canal fractures. ⋯ A combination of helical computed tomography and physical exam findings can allow for judicious use of temporal bone CTs when no maxillofacial CT is indicated. Temporal bone CTs rarely change acute management. But when they do, it is in regard to the need for further workup of possible vascular injury. Lastly, maxillofacial CTs are adequate for identifying carotid canal fractures.
