More than 100 million people ascend to high mountainous areas worldwide every year. At nonextreme altitudes (<5500 m), 10-85% of these individuals are affected by acute mountain sickness, the most common disease induced by mild-moderate hypobaric hypoxia. ⋯ This review presents the most relevant general concepts of these 3 clinical variants, which can be incapacitating and can result in complications and become life-threatening. Proper prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management of these conditions in a hostile environment such as high mountains are therefore essential.

ReviewClinical ultrasonography in the decision-making process in medicine point-of-care ultrasound in clinical decision making.
Clinical ultrasonography has undergone significant development in recent years due to its considerable usefulness and equipment miniaturisation, which have enabled its use at the point of care. Clinical ultrasonography is a tool that supplements the classical anamnesis and physical examination, thereby increasing the practitioner's diagnostic power. ⋯ In the hands of the general practitioner, ultrasonography of the various areas of the body (multiorgan ultrasonography) optimises not only the diagnostic capacity but also the prognostic stratification and monitoring of progress after treatment has been applied. As with the systematic nature of conventional physical examinations, we need to establish an ultrasound examination protocol that supplements the physical examination, thereby redefining and boosting the classic examination.

Review Case Reports[Understanding current practice of clinical medicine in the tropics (II). Bacterial and viral diseases. Malnutrition].
In recent years, a significant number of physicians want to spend part of their medical training in health facilities in developing countries. In this setting, clinical skills are extremely important due to the limited available diagnostic resources. ⋯ Malnutrition is endemic in many countries in Africa and is compounded by the continuous humanitarian and food crisis. In this paper, basic concepts of epidemiology, clinical features, diagnosis and treatment of major diseases that can be found in a rural health post in the tropics are discussed.
