Medical treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus: Recommendations of the Diabetes, Obesity and Nutrition Group of the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine.
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a major health problem with high prevalence, morbidity and mortality, and its medical treatment is growing in complexity due to patients' diverse clinical conditions. This article presents a consensus document by the Diabetes, Obesity and Nutrition Group of the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine, with recommendations for the medical treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. The main objective of this article is to facilitate the therapeutic decision-making process to improve the care of patients with diabetes. The document prioritises treatments with cardiovascular benefits, especially those that benefit patients with heart and renal failure.

Profile of patients who visit medical internists for an osteoporosis assessment: The OSTEOMED registry.
Osteoporosis is considered a generalised skeletal disorder in which there is impaired bone resistance, which predisposes the individual to a greater risk of fracture. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to collect and present data on the main clinical characteristics of patients who consult medical internists in Spain. Understanding these characteristics can help in implementing action plans to improve these patients' care more effectively and efficiently. ⋯ These results define the profile of patients with osteoporosis who attend internal medicine consultations in Spain. The results also show the multisystemic character of this condition, which, along with its high prevalence, determine that the specific internal medicine consultations dedicated to managing the condition are the appropriate place for caring for these patients.

Obesity is a chronic disease. Positioning statement of the Diabetes, Obesity and Nutrition Workgroup of the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine (SEMI) for an approach centred on individuals with obesity.
Obesity is a chronic, complex and multifactorial metabolic disease involved in the development of chronic noncommunicable diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease and cancer. The care of individuals with obesity is an essential part of the holistic approach provided by internal medicine to patients. ⋯ The objective of the present document is to determine the degree of understanding and sensitivity of internists regarding the management of obesity and to develop a consensus of recommendations for the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine based on the scientific evidence and the opinion of its members.

The purpose of this guide is to suggest, based on the available clinical evidence, the prevention measures for venous thromboembolism during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum in expert recommendations and international guidelines. Venous thromboembolism is a cause of maternal death, and it is therefore important to consider those situations in which the risk is greater and for which women should undergo preventive treatment. ⋯ Low-molecular-weight heparin is the treatment of choice for these women. Prophylaxis might be necessary during the antenatal or postnatal period, and the duration and indication will vary depending on the risks and benefits.

This article brings together the views of a working group to deliberate on Burnout among Physicians in Spain. The document is the result of the answers that different members of the group have prepared to different questions on the subject with conclusions derived from the discussion among all the participants. Burnout is an entity with a high incidence in physicians, with serious work, personal and economic repercussions, whose recognition as a disease is changing in recent years. ⋯ The common factor being an increased qualitative or quantitative demand on the professional. Although it may have a substratum of personal characteristics, it is more commonly associated with extrinsic factors specific to the organisation of work and the management of occupational risks. It involves serious indirect costs for the health system including absenteeism, high financial costs and leads to loss of health and well-being in people who suffer it.
