The effectiveness of clonidine as an analgesic in paediatric adenotonsillectomy.
To compare the analgesic effects of preoperative oral clonidine with intraoperative intravenous fentanyl in children undergoing tonsillectomy or adenotonsillectomy. ⋯ Oral clonidine is an effective analgesic and sedative for children undergoing tonsillectomy or adenotonsillectomy.

Midazolam-sufentanil vs sufentanil-enflurane for induction of anaesthesia for CABG surgery.
To compare the effects of midazolam-sufentanil (Group I) and sufentanil-enflurane (Group II) anaesthesia on myocardial oxygenation and metabolism in patients with preserved ventricular function undergoing CABG surgery. ⋯ Compared with sufentanil-enflurane, midazolam-sufentanil anaesthesia resulted in comparable and acceptable haemodynamics and myocardial oxygenation in CABG patients.

Aging prolongs recovery of psychomotor functions at emergence from propofol-alfentanil anaesthesia.
To compare recovery of psychomotor function in elderly and young surgical patients at emergence from propofol-alfentanil anaesthesia. ⋯ Psychomotor performance is impaired in elderly compared with young patients at emergence from propofol-alfentanil anaesthesia. These differences are not likely to be related to propofol accumulation in elderly subjects.

Endotracheal administration of lidocaine inhibits isoflurane-induced tachycardia.
Rapid increase in inspired isoflurane concentration increases heart rate and arterial blood pressure. To investigate whether the responses to isoflurane were elicited from stimulation of lower airway and/or lungs, haemodynamic responses to isoflurane administered after tracheal intubation were measured with or without endotracheal or intravenous administration of lidocaine. ⋯ The isoflurane-induced tachycardia is reduced by pre-treatment with endotracheal lidocaine.
