Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical Trial
The effectiveness of low dose tranexamic acid in primary cardiac surgery.
This randomized controlled clinical trial compared three doses of tranexamic acid (TA) in primary cardiac surgery in terms of blood loss and transfusion requirements. ⋯ This study demonstrates the equivalency of the three doses of TA in primary cardiac surgical procedures. The use of low dose (20 mg.kg-1) TA results in comparable outcomes, without additional complications.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical Trial
Neuromuscular blocking effects of rocuronium during desflurane, isoflurane, and sevoflurane anaesthesia.
To determine the magnitude of the potentiation of rocuronium by desflurane, isoflurane and sevoflurane 1.5 MAC anaesthesia. ⋯ Interaction of rocuronium and volatile anaesthetics resulted in augmentation of the intensity of neuromuscular block but did not result in significant effects on duration of or recovery from the block.

Comparative Study
Evaluation of a new semi-continuous cardiac output system in the intensive care unit.
A new semi-continuous thermodilution cardiac output (CCO) system has been developed recently (Opti-Q and Q-vue Abbott critical care system). The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy and reproducibility of this new device with conventional ice-bolus thermodilution cardiac output (BCO). ⋯ Compared with BCO, this new device was accurate but cannot be considered as interchangeable regarding the limits of agreement. Reproducibility of CCO was superior to BCO.

Case Reports
Deafness and prolonged neuromuscular blockade following single-dose peritoneal neomycin irrigation.
A case of deafness is reported in a patient undergoing bilateral nephrectomy after single irrigation of the peritoneal cavity with a neomycin containing solution for surgical prophylaxis. ⋯ Antibiotic irrigation solutions containing neomycin may produce unwanted adverse systemic effects of deafness and prolonged neuromuscular blockade, even with only brief application within the peritoneal cavity. Concurrent end-stage renal disease, visceral inflammation from chronic dialysis and laparotomy, and the concomitant use of other medications may have contributed to these unwanted effects.
