Remifentanil with morphine transitional analgesia shortens neurological recovery compared to fentanyl for supratentorial craniotomy.
To compare the recovery profiles, efficacy and safety of remifentanil and morphine for transitional analgesia with fentanyl in patients undergoing elective craniotomy for supratentorial mass lesions. ⋯ Remifentanil is a suitable alternative to fentanyl in supratentorial craniotomy. Time to preoperative neurological recovery is faster and morphine provides some transitional analgesia without compromising the quality of recovery.

Volatile anesthetics can protect the heart against reperfusion injury. When sevoflurane is given for the first 15 min of reperfusion, a concentration corresponding to one minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) provides a maximum protective effect. The present study addresses the question of how long sevoflurane has to be administered to achieve the best cardioprotection. ⋯ Administration of 1 MAC sevoflurane for the first two minutes of reperfusion effectively protects the heart against reperfusion injury in rats in vivo. A longer administration time had lesser cardioprotective effects in this experimental model.

Edrophonium effectively antagonizes neuromuscular block at the laryngeal adductors induced by rapacuronium, rocuronium and cisatracurium, but not mivacurium.
To examine the efficacy of antagonism of rapacuronium-, mivacurium-, rocuronium- and cisatracurium-induced neuromuscular block at the laryngeal adductors (LA). ⋯ Recovery from rapacuronium-, rocuronium- or cisatracurium- induced neuromuscular block to a TOF ratio of 0.9 as measured at the LA was shortened by the administration of edrophonium, when compared to spontaneous recovery.
