Design of oxygen delivery systems influences both effectiveness and comfort in adult volunteers.
The aim of this investigation was to compare the efficiency of four oxygen delivery systems in healthy volunteers. ⋯ The results of our evaluation suggest that comfort and clinical performance should be considered when using oxygen delivery devices for patients who require oxygen supplementation.

Mini-dose (0.05 mg) intrathecal morphine provides effective analgesia after transurethral resection of the prostate.
To determine the optimal dose of intrathecal morphine that produces satisfactory analgesia with minimum side effects in elderly patients undergoing transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). ⋯ A dose of 0.05 mg in intrathecal morphine with spinal anesthesia would be optimal for elderly patients undergoing TURP.

Prophylactic iv ondansetron reduces nausea, vomiting and pruritus following epidural morphine for postoperative pain control.
To evaluate the prophylactic effect of ondansetron on nausea and vomiting following epidural morphine for postoperative pain control. ⋯ We conclude that iv ondansetron 4 mg is effective in the prevention of nausea, vomiting, and pruritus following epidural morphine for postoperative pain control.

Volume replacement with HES 130/0.4 may reduce the inflammatory response in patients undergoing major abdominal surgery.
To investigate the effects of intravascular volume replacement therapy on the inflammatory response during major surgery. ⋯ Intravascular volume replacement with HES 130/0.4 may reduce the inflammatory response in patients undergoing major surgery compared to a crystalloid-based volume therapy. We hypothesize that this is most likely due to an improved microcirculation with reduced endothelial activation and less endothelial damage.
