Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Clinical TrialAlbumin influences total plasma antioxidant capacity favorably in patients with acute lung injury.
To ascertain the influence of albumin on antioxidant status in patients with acute lung injury. ⋯ In patients with acute lung injury, albumin administration favorably influences plasma thiol-dependent antioxidant status as well as levels of protein oxidative damage.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative Study Clinical TrialAlcoholic povidone-iodine to prevent central venous catheter colonization: A randomized unit-crossover study.
To compare effectiveness in preventing central venous catheter colonization and infection of two protocols of cutaneous antisepsis using povidone-iodine solution in combination with ethanol or water. ⋯ The use of alcoholic povidone-iodine for skin disinfection reduced the incidence of catheter colonization and related infection compared with aqueous 10% povidone-iodine disinfection in an adult intensive care unit.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialIntravenous glucagon-like peptide 1 normalizes blood glucose after major surgery in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Hyperglycemia is a major risk factor for a poor outcome after major surgery in patients with type 2 diabetes. Intensive insulin treatment aiming at normoglycemia can markedly improve the survival of critically ill patients, but the broad clinical application is limited by its practicability and the risk of hypoglycemia. Therefore, the glucose-lowering effect of the incretin hormone glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) was investigated in patients with type 2 diabetes after major surgery. ⋯ As far as can be concluded on the basis of our data with the infusion of GLP-1 over 8 hrs in eight patients, GLP-1 can be used to reduce glucose concentrations in patients with type 2 diabetes after major surgery.
