Multicenter Study Comparative StudyPrescribing practice and off-label use of psychotropic medications in post-acute brain injury rehabilitation centres: a cross-sectional survey.
Guidance on pharmacotherapy of neurobehavioural sequelae post-acquired brain injury (ABI) is limited. Clinicians face the choice of prescribing off-label. This survey assesses prescribing practice and off-label use of psychotropic medications in Italian brain injury rehabilitation centres and factors associated with atypical antipsychotics use. ⋯ In clinical practice, the effectiveness and safety of medications, in particular off-label, should be systematically monitored. Studies are needed to improve the quality of evidence guiding pharmacotherapy and to evaluate effectiveness and safety of off-label prescribing.

Serum ferritin correlates with Glasgow coma scale scores and fatal outcome after severe traumatic brain injury.
Severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with a 30-70% mortality rate. Nevertheless, in clinical practice there are no effective biomarkers for the prediction of fatal outcome following severe TBI. Therefore, the aim was to determine whether ferritin serum levels are associated with ICU mortality in patients with severe TBI. ⋯ Increased serum ferritin levels were associated with lower hospital admission GCS scores and predicted short-term fatal outcome following severe TBI.

The relationship between self-reported sleep disturbance and polysomnography in individuals with traumatic brain injury.
To characterize sleep architecture and self-reported sleep quality, fatigue and daytime sleepiness in individuals with TBI. Possible relationships between sleep architecture and self-reported sleep quality, fatigue and daytime sleepiness were examined. ⋯ A high proportion of the sample endorsed poor sleep quality, fatigue and daytime sleepiness. Those who reported poorer sleep quality evidenced a shorter proportion of time spent in stage 2 sleep. These findings suggest that disruptions in stage 2 sleep might underlie the symptoms of sleep disturbance experienced following TBI.

Combined robotic-aided gait training and physical therapy improve functional abilities and hip kinematics during gait in children and adolescents with acquired brain injury.
To evaluate the combined effect of robotic-aided gait training (RAGT) and physical therapy (PT) on functional abilities and gait pattern in children and adolescents exiting acquired brain injury (ABI), through functional clinical scales and 3D-Gait Analysis (GA). ⋯ The data suggest that the combined programme RAGT + PT induces improvements in functional activities and gait pattern in children and adolescents with ABI and demonstrated it to be an elective tool for the maintenance of the patients' full compliance throughout the rehabilitative programme.
